Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

That's definitely a cockerel, Chic. But - bear in mind that females do get little bumps in the spur area as well, and ALSO sometimes actually grow long spurs like males. I don't think it's super common, but I know of a few folks (BYC members) off the top of my head that have hens with very long spurs.

I like his yellow under his feet & length of back!

Oh - as far as him not crowing - I'm sure he has the ability, but being the beta male, the alpha would more than likely now "allow" him to. They will often peck the beta males - HARD - when they crow, so it may be that he's just not allowed. Which is also why he's getting along well with the alpha male.

Oh my, thats almost disheartening. I do like both roosters. OPA isn't a hand held bird anymore. He's not mean but just doesn't want to be picked up.
Im sure the ladies at "fat class" thursday will enjoy seeing him
Would he go ahead and breed if I put him in a separate pen that the other roo couldn't get to him, with some ladies of course. Or wouldn't he bother?? Would I have to take the other Roo and put him out of sight. ??

Im thinking, if I let him breed with the Lt Brahmas would the F1's all be black??

I haven't called the seller yet, but in the post she said that they were hatched from "Bobbi Porto's eggs" in Feb. Has anyone heard of this line?
In the pics the Roo looks huge and gorgeous. So what do you think? Should I get them?

Thanks for the info, her JG's look amazing! The only thing really holding me back is that I have a bantam roo over 3 hens right now and 4 more pullets are going to move outside within the next week, and a broody with 4 eggs under her. I don't know how my bantam roo would get along with the JG. I must be crazy, but I REALLY want these JG's!!!

I took a picture of my Jersey Giant cock, Leggs. He was strutting around in the Orp pen here. He is about finished up molting. He was hatched April 24, 2010. It's not a great picture, but I thought I would post it anyway. He is a great guy. We all just love him. I'm including a copy (below) of my post from when he hatched (for entertainment purposes).

DD was visiting this evening, and said, "Mom, don't you hear that chirping?" I had finished hatching the Icelandics, and they were in the Rubbermaid tote brooder, across the room. I have 2 bators going; one on each end of the 30 ft long room. I had forgotten to unplug the bator the Icelandics hatched in. (I thought I had, though.) My intent was to clean and sanitize both bators tomorrow (as the BRs should hatch tonight in the other). I told her she was just hearing the chicks across the long room. "NO, Mom, the chirping is coming from this bator." Well, there's nothing in there .....

OMG ...... I forgot ...... there was one Jersey Giant egg in with the Icelandics! They had played soccer in there, and pushed the egg way to the back corner. The humidity had to be next to nothing. I had neglected the bator for about 24 hours! Could it be? OMG .... YES! This chick hatched out clean as a whistle! Here it is about an hour after hatching:
