I took the shelves back out tonight and brought them in the house and have otten a couple coats of high gloss white enamel on both of them. Should be able to put it back together tomorrow, the temp is supposed to hit 45*, YES!!

Got more plywood and hardware so get to work on it some more.

So, I am all kinds of excited about the eggs I have in my incubator right now. 10 of them are from my Giant pen. What's got me so anxious is that I will be hatching from my own stock for the first time this year. My original flock started from a dozen eggs from Maria Hall. Last year I bred my "keepers" and then selected the two best ones to keep for breeding this year (2012). My splash cockerel will be one next month, but he was out prowling the hills. Here is a picture of my blue pullet (same age) whose eggs might be part of the incubator mix right now.

I managed to stalk the splash cockerel from a distance. I've cropped the images to show just him rather than the entire woods. I know his comb isn't great with the blade back like that, but what do you all think of his overall outline?


He'll be going in the black pen in a week so I can hatch out some blue offspring. I'm hoping the new blood from the trio I got this fall will counteract his less-than-ideal comb.

Oldchurch - I wouldn't worry so much about his comb; the point deduction for a less-than-perfect comb is small.

In my opinion, and I'm NO expert, this is not a male I would use, as his back appears to be much too short, and it's not flat - it's a "U" shape, which isn't in keeping with the SOP. Again, though - just my opinion, and he's definitely a handsome boy otherwise!

ETA, I like your female much better than the male, from what I can see! Are the bottoms of her feet yellow?

Thanks, Wynette. I know I've got a ways to go with my birds, but I think it will be worth the effort because I enjoy them most of the birds I keep. My plan is to use the two black hens I got this fall with my splash cockerel and then keep the best blue hens to use with the black cock from the trio. If I come out with a better typed cockerel in the splash's offspring, I'll replace him with his son. I really like the blue color so my goal is to have a few blues up to the SOP to show in Fall 2014. Long range, but I think it will probably take every day of it! I joined the Giant Club this fall and am thinking of going to the New Jersey meet this fall to get a look at what I should aim for in my program. The good points about this guy are he's got the size weight-wise and a breadth of heart-girth that will at least make for decent roasters as I weed out the culls. If I can work towards a longer back like you've mentioned, that should yield attractive (and tasty!) results.

Most definitely, and a good plan! The blues really are much more difficult to work with than the blacks are, but they are gorgeous to be SURE! Glad to hear you joined the club; I would for SURE go to the NJ meet if only to see what else it out there & meet some great Giant folks! I'm sure Joe Cavieleri (I always spell his name wrong, so not sure on spelling), the president of the club, will be there since he's from Long Island. He's a VERY nice man, and his wife is uber friendly as well - I REALLY enjoyed meeting them & chatting last fall at Crossroads! Great folks!

Awe....Twinkle is lovely! Boy, this gal has some honkin' wattles on her! She's got a pretty eye - I like her head, very pretty!

Thank you! She came from a hatchery and well, she went to several shows and placed high, Reserve American, Best of Breed, Class Champion, all for a hatchery chick who was the only one who survived (1/8) a whole outbreak of marek's? Well, i'd call her my miracle chicken!
