Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Is blue a colour you can show,
and has any one ever tried to mix a silver spangled hamburger with black jersey giants?

Wow, Ive been away from BYC for a few weeks and have just LOVED all the pics that have been recently posted; especially that last one, just gorgeous!!

Oh and I'm a Giant club member too.

I probably am NOT going to get into Jersey's at this time. Ive gone ahead and incubated some of my own eggs and taken in chicks a friend did of mine so I have myself up to 23 chickens now and don't have the room to be adding Jerseys. Thanks to everyone Ive talked to about getting some eggs, but I just won't be doing them this year. Too many others here at Misfit Mansion of Munger, maybe if/when I cull some roosters before winter I MAY decide to cull out some of the older hens, but maybe not cuz they are all laying well. I do keep coming to this thread and seeing the pics tho. Such lovely sweet birds. Good Luck everyone with your JGs and all the babies.
I also have 6 pure white Canadian strain Chantecler's coming I have to do.

Hello again everyone,

I have had no luck what so ever finding someone with JG's here in Maine. So now I am trying to find someone with eggs for hatching. I am not looking to add a ton of birds, ideally just a hen or 2 for now, so really only would like 6-8 eggs. If you can help point me in the right direction, that would be wonderful!

Thanks!

Darn! My JG hens are with a Buff Orp roo right now. I plan on putting the JG roo back in with them this week. But it'll take 3 (?) weeks for the hens not to be fertile by the Orp.

i will keep looking! right now i dont have my own incubator, but a fellow bycer offered to hatch for me. hopefully i will have my own in a month or so, and maybe you will have some jg eggs not long after that!

I actully have at this point 18 eggs I don't have room for of my blue jersey giants.
They are Not show quality, but if you just want them for eggs. I could ship them tue. Let me know if you would like any as I will get another dozen from them today. I have sq java eggs coming and have way more jg chicks then the other breeds so I need to save room for them.
Oh and you don't have to take them all.

someone previously mentioned that they were able to sex Giants via eye color - I'd not seen that eye color is a sex linked trait, so I got with my mentor, who got some expert opinions:

Replies are from a judge, a successful breeder/exhibitor of Jersey Giants for almost 50 years, and the director of two districts in the NJGC who is also a successful breeder/exhibitor of Jersey Giants:

-They have never heard of this method.
-Light eyes in Jersey Giants are a disqualification (as per APA Standard).
-Their own chicks are born with dark eyes

A genetics specialist (who is also a poultry judge) further stated "eye color is not sex linked."

Just wanted to set the record straight on this one! It would be nice if it was this easy, but apparently, it is not.
