hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Oregonboy - I'm so sorry. Sometimes, they just aren't meant to survive. Bless you for trying to help the chick!

Zootopia - Yes, Giants should do just fine in your area. So long as they have shade and fresh, clean water daily, they should be just fine. Congrats on all your many years of showing and winning with other critters! This will give you a keen eye on interpreting the SOP for chickens, should you decide to go that route!

4-h - YES! Awesome - great job! Pics?

Thanks Wynette,
Chicken genetics is quite different from what I know , but I'm learning. The great thing about raising the Guinea pigs was how much I learned about genetics (and you can do 3 generations in a year). Taking someone Else's culls and improving on them every generation. I don't intend to show right now, but I do enjoy the challenge of comparing my animals to an SOP. No such thing as the perfect specimen, but there's no harm in trying. I have been showing DH pics of the Giants on here, of all colors. He was pretty stuck on the blacks but I think it was more because that's the only color really good quality Giant he had ever seen in person. (I prefer very dark brindle dogs in my breed but had only owned one the first 15 years I had them) I don't care what color it is, it's about quality (temperament, health, type) He is starting to see the light (that pic of Soaring's Splash roo didn't hurt). Besides if he still prefers the blacks, I can do that for him with good quality BBS. It's all about the genetics, and knowing what to do with them.

Zootopia, you are completely right! Sometimes it's really interesting & educational (as well as fun) to chat about specifics of the SOP and how folks interpret it - that's what I enjoy the most about the breed threads on BYC. Especially when they include pictures!

This Jersey Giant chick hatched Wed April 4 with this hanging out the back. The stuff hanging dried up but chick died Sunday morning. Any ideas on what causes this or why it happens?
Thanks for any input just curious

Sorry you lost the chick. It looks like it pulled to hard away from the egg when hatching and looks like it gutted its self.
Sometimes the chicks are in to much of a hurry to hatch.
As far as I know there is nothing you could do to stop that from happening or to keep them alive.

Awe...sorry, 4-h - yes, that is intestines. Sometimes, they are born with the intestines hanging out; usually they pass within 3-4 days if that's the case. It can be confused with the umbilicus. I have heard of some folks having success with sort of "poking" them back in...this isn't something recommended as they can easily get infection. The best thing to do is cull immediately when this happens.

Wynette, do this happen to only the JG breed

or any breed hatching? Also I wanted to ask you. This weekend I wormed my flock with Ivermectin pour on. I know that we are not to eat the eggs for two weeks but can I keep setting them?

excited about our first show this weekend. Baths done this past week end. The boys are taking 3 JG and 3 Brahma Bantam. I wanted to share this story with you all. My oldest son has pick JG as the breed he wants to show. So 2 yrs ago we jump in with both feet enjoying and learning as we go. One thing I learnt was that the Giant were gentle giants but rather large for the boys to handle well for showmanship. So that is why we have the Brahma Bantams. So here we go the next show season with our JG and BB but the boys wont take there Brahmas in for showmanship ring. Refuses to take any thing but a Giant. What am I to do
