Jersey Giants

Not to hijack your thread, but in addition to quantity, what about size. I have only had 2 Black Jersey Giants (Ideal) and 1 Blue Jersey Giant (Breeder - Just started laying). So far, their egg size has been Med - Large. Nothing like the Sex-Links, Production Reds.

So do the JG's eat a TON? I heard they are laid back & very nice. Where do I get a Blue JG??

They are large chickens so yes, they do eat more. My oldest hen will be 8 years old in the spring, she is an awesome mother and raises a lot of babies for me. I think they are better layers as they age a little. My old girl still lays a consistanly large egg. The younger ones are laying bigger eggs than my red stars which lay pretty big eggs.

My cockerel is very friendly and has a silly personality, the girls are somewhat serious and are top of the pecking order.

One thing I have found with Jersey eggs in regards to hatching in the incubator (and I even read this, so it's true): The eggs are so large, that it actually takes an extra day, sometimes two, for the chick to finish developing. It's so large, it needs the extra time to fully absorb the yolk sac.

Here are some photos of my WJGs that died out from not laying any eggs...LOL

Hard to breed them if they won't lay the eggs for hatching!
About 3 months old...maybe 4??

Pullet: 3-4 months old:

I'm holding her, I'm 6' tall to give some example there.

OK and thanks so much. I was wondering if I bought WJG instead of meat birds. But, although they look similiar.......the legs on yours look longer.
