Chapter 1: The Newbie
"Oh my! Look at all those people!" thought Jesse, "Wouldn't you take me home?"
Jesse was trying so hard to be patient. She had been stuck at this feed store for the last two weeks, along with four other little Barred Rocks. Her closest friend, Maple, was quite anxious too!
"What if I get too old and big, and no one will want me?? Oh no! I'm not a baby chick anymore, Jesse. Those featherless birds like cute, tiny and fluffy chicks! Not ugly ducklings!!," Maple cried out, "besides! It's the middle of April, not summer!"
"Calm down, ok?! We're going to be all right. Oh, oh! Act all cute, here comes someone!"
The feed store lady open up the brooder and took Jesse and Maple out and put them in a little box. It was so dark! They felt a featherless bird pick up the box and set them on a counter. Then they started talking Jibberish. But Jesse caught one phrase, "Here is your change, ma'am. Have a nice day."
What change? What day? thought Jesse. Were they going to a new home?
"Ah! What was that noise?" Maple exclaimed as the featherless birds started their car, "Who goes there??"
"Shh! I think we're going to a new home," Jesse scolded. She couldn't help but be quite scared herself. What if they don't like me? What if they take me back? What if we crash? All these doubts started running through poor little Jesse's brain. This was a new and stressful experience for her. But she knew she had to pretend to be the brave one. Maple was as scared as a mouse!
All of a sudden, they heard a bunch of sniffing. Maple and Jesse peeped through a slit they found in the box. A dog! It was wagging its tail like a propeller.
"Chicks! Chicks! Oh, I love chicks! I was hoping my human would bring some home soon!" The overly excited dog exclaimed, "More friends!"
"What the," Jesse questioned, " More friends?"
Another big dog came over and sniffed the box lazily. "Big whoop. Just some more birds full of poop," the fat dog explained.
Jesse was hurt by his comment. "We are not just birds full of poop. Now be respectful or I'll peck you!"
The fat dog chuckled and walked away.
I'll show him! Little Jesse thought.

The featherless birds took Jesse and Maple inside of the featherless birds coop. They walked through a cold breeze when they opened the door. Whoosh! Jesse almost fell over. Maple was shivering in one of the corners of the box. Jesse attempted to comfort her, but it was no use. She wouldn't snap out of it. The box was suddenly set down. The chicks heard some ripping noises.
Oh no! We're next!" Maple screamed. Jesse just rolled her eyes. "What a drama queen!" thought Jesse, "They couldn't possibly bring us home to rip us in half, right?
Suddenly, the top of the box was opened. Jesse and Maple had to shield their eyes from the light with their wings. It was so bright! A ginormous hand came down and took Maple. "AHHHH!!! Put me down this instant! I will not tolerate this kind of torture!" Her beak was forced into some nice and cold water. The same thing happened to Jesse.
"Food!!!!" they said simultaneously. They surely built up an appetite!
After they pigged out on some plain crumbles and cold, delicious water, they slowly walked under the brooder lamp and fell asleep.

Chapter two: The Escape

Now Jesse and Maple have been living in their bathtub-brooder for quite some time now. They started a growth spurt and grew wings, which made it so fun to fly onto to the feeder, then fly up to the edge of the bathtub, while in the process of knocking the feeder over, and had the goal of soaring around the room. Jesse decided she was the one who needed to try first.
"Here I go!!" she yelled. Zoom! She was in the air.
The harder she flapped her wings, the more she seemed to be falling. "AHHHHH!! I'm gonna crash!" she cried urgently. Then in a split second she was on the floor, eyes shut, deep-breathing and the worst, unconsciousness. Maple counted only eight seconds passed until she woke up.
"Don't worry, Sis! I'm coming! I think," Maple said confused. Now how did she get out again?
"Remember, just fly on top of the feeder, then jump on the edge and onto the floor. It's simple!" Jesse informed.
"Huh?"
"Jump on the feeder, then the edge and onto the floor!" Jesse was now frustrated. She was plastered to the floor with a damaged wing.
"I'm comin', I'm comin', ah!" Maple rolled onto the tile, "That hurt!"
"Oh boy," Jesse said under her breath. This was definitely going to be a challenge! And we certainly don't want to get caught. Jesse slowly got up, with her wing drooping, and looked around. What is this big tower? It seemed to have a hole in the center. "Hmmm, if I could just get up there," Jesse thought to herself, "Well, it's worth a shot!"
Just as she was getting into the squatting position, Maple was squealing over some toilet paper she found on the ground. It distracted Jesse from the serious business she was trying to accomplish. Ok, now, back to business, no distractions. Jesse jumped as high as she could, flapped her wing, then landed into the hole in the middle. It was full of water! "I can't swim!!! Help!! Me!!!" she screamed.
Maple was too distracted by the new friend she made. "I'm going to call you, hmmm, Mr. Papers! Yes, that's it! Mr. Papers." Maple was delighted. Then Maple heard some noise coming from Jesse. She couldn't understand her, so Maple said, "One second, Jesse! Mr. Papers and I are just a little busy! Sheesh!"
"Maple! Help! Can't, swim!" she cried desperately. She couldn't get anything out. The disgusting water tasted terrible! Then she hear footsteps. "It's about time!" Jesse thought.

One of the featherless birds walked in the room. She made a disappointed gesture as she stepped on some chick droppings. Yuck!
When she heard some cheeping coming from the big pot, she quickly picked Jesse up, got a warm, fuzzy towel and dried the freezing chick off. Jesse was given some wonderful and tasty oatmeal to warm her up. She giggled with pleasure. Once Jesse recovered, she was placed back in the brooder with Maple and slept soundly.

Early the next day, when Jesse awoke, she noticed something different. The water and food was GONE!!!
"Maple, wake up! The food and water is gone!!!"
"Huh?"
"Wake up!"
"Why? I wanna go back to sleep," Maple complained.
"The FOOD and WATER is GONE!!"
"Oh my gosh! Why didn't you just tell me so??"
"I did! Just get up," Jesse ordered.
All of a sudden, those big, featherless bird hands came down and picked Jesse and Maple up. They were both put in a small box.
"I knew this day was coming!" Jesse was getting tears, "She's taking us back to the feed store!!!"

Chapter 3: Moving!
Jesse and Maple were freaked out. Why didn't the featherless birds want them anymore??
"There's good news and bad news," Jesse reported,"Which would you like to hear first?"
"Hmm, let me think. Of course the good news!!!" Maple said nervously.
"Well, we aren't hearing that scary monster like we did at the feed store. So, I don't think we're heading over there," Jesse said as casually as she possibly could.
"And the bad news is???"
"I have no clue where we're going!"
I bright light shined through the top of the box, for the featherless birds had oped it. This definitely didn't look like that smelly, old feed store. It had more of a, natural smell. The featherless birds grabbed the chicks and took them out of the box. They could feel the gentle April breeze move their small feathers. Jesse sighed at the sight of green grass and the warm sunshine. Awww, what a lovely day. She took a long, deep breath of the crisp, morning air.
The featherless birds kept walking. They opened up a gate and walked up to a little and empty chicken hutch. One of them opened up the door, turned on a light, put Jesse and Maple in there, shut the door and left. The chicks were all alone now.
"Now do you know where we are??" Maple said sarcastically.
"Why does she always have to be so rude," Jesse thought, "She just doesn't understand that sometimes, it's better to shut up!"
Jesse turned away from her, so Maple couldn't read her expressions on what she was thinking. She was pretty good at that. Jesse found the food and water, but had lost her appetite. She tried sleeping, but couldn't. Not with that rascal watching her suspiciously. It was starting to creep Jesse out.
"Ok, now why are you looking at me like that?" Jesse blurted out.
Silence.
"What's the matter?? What are you looking at?"
Maple was still frozen. Jesse was getting worried, but was too afraid to turn around. She felt the chills going up and down her spine.
"Tell me what is going on!" Maple was shivering, which made Jesse freeze. Then she turned around and saw something she never, ever wanted to encounter. Face to face.
