Chapter 5
2 weeks later...
Jesse and Maple were outside enjoying the after noon with their finally befriended Black Austrolorp friends. Eating grass and bugs, dust baths and playing in the dirt had become the habit.
"Aww, this is the life!" Maple exclaimed as she looked up at the clouds.
It was certainly a wonderful day. Suddenly, the featherless came in talking gibberish, smiling and clucking about everything.
"What's going on?" Jesse questioned.
"Somethings not right," answered Faith nervously. Even Joy didn't have the confidence in her eyes she always had. The featherless went in the newly finished chicken coop.
Why don't we get to go in there, Jesse thought, this isn't fair.
"Is that peeping I hear?" Maple remarked. Oh no.
"Friends!! Friends!! FRIENDS!!!" the obnoxious dog screeched.
"Though this is a bad to to ask, what IS your name??" Joy questioned.
"It's Xander(pronounced Zander)!!!!" he said answered energetically.
"And your buddy,"
"Gandalf!!" He was close to falling down by wagging his tail so hard from all the attention.
Freak, Maple thought.
Ok, now back to reality. Were these CHICKS those humans were bringing home? The door to the new coop was left opened, so Jesse inched up the steps. She stuck her head in the door, and what did she see? These freakishly small chicks! Not even two days old.
"This is absurd!" Jesse clucked.
"What? What do you see???" Faith asked.
"Um, your not going to..." Jesse was interrupted.
"Just spit it out already!" One of the big hens declared.
"Alright! There's little baby chicks in there!"
Everyone was shocked. Maple spoke up.
"Uh, how many do you see?" she said casually, only expecting the answer to be around ten.
"I see about fifty in there!!!" Jesse shouted.
This is bad, Joy thought, this is very bad.
"Can you get a closer look?" Maple asked.
"There's nothing more to see! Just a bunch of chicks running around," Jesse said.
The humans, at least that's what that dog calls them, left the door open and went back in their coop. The four silently walked into the coop. They peered over the walls of the kiddie pool that the humans were using as a brooder. There they say the most terrifying thing since the feed store. Chicks, chicks, chicks and more chicks! (As you all can see, Jesse and her friends were not the most socialized group) They were stunned. Why oh why, Jesse thought.
"This is SO cool!" Maple shouted! That got the chicks attention. One of the roosters, James Bond(Black Austrolorp), came over to check out the situation.
"Hey! He looks like me when I was a chick!" Faith exclaimed, "He's so cute!"
"Excuse me, ladies, but could you tell me where the door is?" he said sarcastically. All of the other chicks started cracking up at his joke.
"Watch it buster! Or you'll pay," Joy warned.
James took a step back and said, "Oh I'm so scared! What are you going to do? Brood me to death?"
"That's it!" and Joy then charged and tripped over the brooder's edge. That got the chicks laughing so hard, most of them fell over. James came up and jumped on top of Joy's head, and proclaimed, "Nobody messes with James Bond." The chicks cheered.
"Hoorah!" a little Wyandotte named Pam said, "That giant is history!"
Jesse couldn't stand it any longer, so she walked out of the coop and got a nice drink of water.
"Are you all right?" Maple asked.
"I'll be fine. It's just that, those chicks! How could they treat Joy that way?"
"I don't know, but all I know, is that we're going to make some new...."
Joy ran out of the coop and took off holding something black in her mouth...
