I see where some are losing chickens to predators. On man said “ those stupid raccoons” I have news for him. I tried a Humane trap. They are too smart. They get the bait (marshmallows ) every time. Even learned to trip the door. I lost half my flock to raccoons. I set up a camera and the little Devil at 11:30 pm was climbing the chain link enclosure I built. I then bought a dukes dog proof trap. They are hard to set so spend the 3$ and get a trap setter. Since may 30th, I have trapped 8 raccoons that will never eat my chickens again. I had no experience but looked on u tube to learn about them. I do not enjoy killing things but one 22 bullet between the eyes does the trick. Some say this is cruel but letting them kill my chickens is worse.

Hi and welcome to BYC. I also trapped a family (of six raccoons) a couple of years ago. They killed every single one of my neighbor's 30 hens before moving in for mine. Even though my lgds usually keep predators at bay, it became clear those coons weren't gonna give up. Like you, I researched and purchased duke dog-proof coon traps and watched you-tube videos to understand how to set them up. (And yes I bought a $3 trap-setter tool too.) The traps are incredibly effective. I bought 2 traps, and set them every night until the coons were all gone. The untrapped coons never grew wise enough to keep their paws out of the traps, unlike how quickly raccoons grow wise to cage traps. I also don't like killing animals, and never had a problem before or since those raccoons were gone. I don't think anyone on BYC will criticize you for dispatching raccoons that were killing your flock; they are one of the top worst poultry predators.

Post your video to YouTube, then share the link on BYC. You might consider making a new thread and posting the video on the Predators forum instead of here.
