Jinxed :-(

Hi, something similar happened to me in 2015. I was very unsure if the eggs would hatch or not. I said "I've come this far" and left them in for the remaining 12 days and on day 19 they started hatching. I read somewhere that higher temps makes them hatch earlier. No Idea if It's true or not, but I hope that you are as fortunate as me. Good luck!

I'm not familiar with your type of incubator so i don't know how much electricity it draws. I would think you could hook up to a ups battery backup to ride out power cuts if you wanted to. I use one of the cheap foam incubators and a ups kept my hatch safe for 12 plus hours when a drunk driver took out a utility pole. :)
I can't really justify the expense of a generator. We normally have no real need....if the power goes out, it's seldom longer than a couple of hours and we can live with that. This is the first time in three years that it's been an issue and it's only because of the chicks. Now I'm really worried that we will lose power while they are in the brooder and the heaters and bulb will all go off....the room they will be in is way too cold for them to survive without the heat. If I'm home, it's not a problem, I can move them or provide heat via hot water bottles but if I'm out.....!

Anyway, some good news....four chicks made it out safely today and two of those were from malpositions. One was from the egg in the top photo in my last post. The other was not from the other egg in that post....that egg has not changed but I can, at least, now hear some fairly vigorous peeping from it and I've seen movement so fingers crossed it will be OK. No, the other malpositioned one was from yet another egg with the pip the wrong end, that 'appeared' yesterday tea-time. The chicks are now drying off in a separate incubator......

I shall definitely look into a UPS....didn't know you could get them! That would be ideal....not for the incubator now, as we are on the home stretch, but I am now worried about the brooder as the room it is in is not warm enough for them to survive long if the power goes out xx

In the meantime, chick number five just arrived, unassisted, from one of the worst malpositioned eggs....pipped right down the pointy end in long, narrow shaped egg and yet got out on her own....go girl!!!!

Hopefully the rest of the chicks are OK. Once I had chicks hatching one of them ended up getting stuck in his shell. All of the chicks were hatching and he couldn't break out of the shell. I moved it a few times but nothing was happening. So the next day I took It out of the incubator and his head seemed to be wrapped in the membrane which was hard as a rock. I took a wet paper towel and started getting the membrane wet and I started slowly peeling the shell apart and got him out. For a few days he couldn't walk but then he started copying the other chicks and now he loves running around. It turned out to be a rooster. They are pretty docile for Black copper marans but they will probably get more skittish when they are older because even the rooster is friendly but they are only 9 or 10 weeks so I'll see what happens.

So egg-citing!!!!! Adorable!

You can plug your lights and heater into one too. They're absolutely wonderful. It won't run things long term but it certainly will buy some time. Nice looking hatch so far, don't worry about the wrong enders too much chicks are tough! :)

Do you know what sort of 'strength' I would need to run electric hens? The UPS seem to be measured in VA (voltage amps) but the hens are measured in Watts. I have three electric hens and they are all 20 watt....so what VA rating would I need to run 60 watts of hens for a couple of hours? xx

Mine is 650va so roughly it can
