JJ our 10 month old piebald doxie had a little diarrhea last night at 10 pm just before bed. Just a spot of blood. Not too uncomprehendible seeing that he is a chewer and eats everything. I woke up at 5 am with him vomiting blood on the bed and got up quickly to find something to clean it and there were close to 10 piles of VERY bloody vomit and stool all over the house. We ran to vet and he was negative for parvo. He was diagnosed with hemorragic gastroenteritis. He is on an IV and IV antibiotics. We thought he could come home tonight but no go. He won't eat still. Please be praying for him!!! His is so loving and wonderful and he has completed our family. We would be devastated if we lost him!!

People beware!! This is common in small dogs like schnauzers, doxies and poodles. One drop of blood in vomit or stool and you should be in the vet!!

How terrible!

So sorry you are having to deal with this. I love my doxie (she came from a Piebald mommy) and can't imagine our house without her.

My fingers are crossed for your little JJ.

Thank you! The house is quiet and lonely tonight. I almost can't bear it!!

Just got off the phone with the vet and he is still vomiting blood and having bloody diarrhea. Very upsetting. The lady I had talked to earlier, around 6 said he hadnt done that all day, and the only reason they were keeping him was that he wouldn't eat. Now I find out he has been doing it all day. Geesh, what a roller coaster. Now I am not going to be able to sleep.

YEAH!!!!!! JJ is better this morning and gets to come home. He had more runs at midnight but is eating and wagging his tail. They discontinued his IV fluids this morning and he is drinking. Thank you Jesus for healing him!!!!!!!!!

I'm not saying this to scare you, but please watch him very carefully at home. I lost a three year old wire dachshund to HGE a few years ago. If they have had it once, they may be prone to have it again. I do wish they would figure out the exact cause. My little girl got sick at 14 weeks old with what we assumed at the time was mushroom poisoning because she had some mushrooms in her vomit. She recovered, but she got sick with the same symptoms three years later. She spent the weekend in the emergency clinic. This time the diagnosis was HGE. They sent her home and she seemed all better, but a couple of days later we woke up to find her in her crate, stiff, cold, covered in bloody diarrhea, but still breathing. We rushed to get her to the vet, but she stopped breathing in the car. HGE can kill in just a few hours. It is a horrible disease - I hate it. The vet did a necropsy and then sent her body to the state lab for further testing, but no cause was found and any type of poisoning was ruled out, so the HGE diagnosis stood with no known cause.

But, most dogs do recover and go on to live normal lives with no more episodes, so, like I said, not trying to be negative and scare you, but do watch him.

How Horrible!! I am so sorry you lost yours!! I read many stories just like that in my web searches over the last few days. It is very, very scary. I am not sure if I should be changing his diet permanently or not. More people with small dogs should be aware of this. I have had dogs for all my 40+ years and I am a nurse and I have never heard of this. If I had known, I would have taken him the night before and he would have missed alot of suffering!! I feel so guilty!! Yes, he will be very, very closely watched!
