I sent another inquiry via email to the Animal control Administrator. I included the answer I recieved from his staff and asked if that was accurate.

Will see what he say's ? I was very hopeful when I got the response from them.

Gosh, I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I just didn't want you to be an "out of the closet" chicken owner, and get unexpectedly busted. Best of luck and be careful!

I have only communicated with them via email not phone or mail so they shouldn't know where I live. I have also not given them my name.

With the economy the way it is, and the price of EVERYTHING going through the roof...the "powers that be" should understand and appreciate the fact that you are trying to be self-reliant and put food on your table. If you are allowed to grow your own food in the area that you are in, I would consider keeping chickens a necessity...they keep bugs down (pesticides not needed), create natural fertilizer and compost material, and best of all - lay eggs. Tell the county you are simply growing your breakfast!

I'm behind you all the way!

well. I am officially an outlaw now.
Got a "door knob note" today.
Guess the animal control person came by to "check on the welfare of my animals" since most of the city is still without power(we have had it since Saturday am BTW

)

I checked my cities bylaws already and it says nothing about keeping them for my families OWN use. Just keeping them for breeding and selling extras or meat/eggs. Since we are not doing that. My chcikens are NOT livestock.. by city definition. But I am sure to have a fight ahead of me anyway. Or maybe not, since my neighbors are cool with them. And,, as others have stated. they are a lot quieter than the freaking dogs and other stuff around here.

And so the "fun" begins

Geez, what a bummer! I sure wish you luck in your fight.

I'm compiling a list of cities and their (pro & con) chicken bylaws. I'd take a look at the bylaws if I knew where you live. May I ask what municipality or city you fall under?

Only thing it says of "livestock" is that one needs 5 acres. However.
Livestock is defined as a product or product producing agricultural endeavor. I am not selling my chickens or their eggs. I bake A LOT. "extra" eggs will go to my mom or my MIL.
I am also not breeding or killing them for food to sell to others. Heck I am not even raising them for my own families plates.
The eggs are a bonus. But the girls are our pets.

That said. "We" are already making plans just in case the city cant be persuaded to see them as pets. Either way. They will have to pry them out of mine and my 6 year olds arms to get them to give them up. And I can tell you. That is so NOT happening
