We are joining the fowl fun from The River City here in Richmond, VA. After the suburban chickens were approved Joe and I decided to add a few hens to our little team.

I have enjoyed reading and learning here on BYC so I decided it was time to join the ranks! Chicken coop designs and questions to come!!

Thank you in advance for all the help you, as members, have provided to wondering chicken owners and prospective owners alike.

Well, no Chicken pictures yet, but I have some coop design pictures!! I've done what feels like 20 hours (or just a LOT) of coop design research, BYC forums, youtube, books, etc... here is what I've come up with for our prospective hens. 4 hens to be exact, which will arrive in April or later depending on permits and site inspections.

The coop itself will measure 6' x 4' x 3' on the short side, 4' high at the peak, allowing plenty of room for 4 hens, the run will be 8' x 6'x 7' on the high side, 8' x 6' x 6' on the low end. More than the required square footage in Richmond, VA.
Inside the coop I've included a roosting bar about a foot high, linoleum flooring, a large door which opens for cleaning and the floor has no lip so I can rake droppings and the like right out, 3 vented windows, two nesting boxes with a hinged roof for egg collecting, an egg basket hook as I've heard it is quite handy, a screened door for human access, and did I mention a sandbox in the run.

I am still perfecting the design but thanks to red tape involved in the chicken owning process I have some time.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
