Judge Judy: Free Chickens

How did he even find that ad? Or did this couple place ads in CL's for that many miles around?

Our CL down here is for DFW and surrounding... now and then I'll see one for out near Tyler, etc. But that's not even close to being 250 miles away. Weird.

Wonder what will happen if he tries calling another CLer... I'd prolly refuse outright to deal with him just to be on the safe side... as I'm all to aware that spit happens. To end up having to pay out $350 because something came up... when the only reason I'd list on CL in the first place is if I were in desperate need of funds... selling things off... nope, not worth the risk.

I love Judge Judy. Too bad I missed it.

Well, Judge Judy is definitely real. She's been around for a very long time with a long history in the real legal system before she retired and did that show. I know she has a lot of integrity and have no doubt it's real.

BUT: I have seen a few other court shows that copy her format that are totally fake and you can tell.

It was a lot of chickens. I didn't hear how many, but she reluctantly offered to give him two chickens and he laughed and said to the judge, "I wouldn't drive 500 miles for just two chickens!" So I believe it was a large number.

I think that they get paid and the money for the judgment is taken out of that. If I remember right I haven't had t.v. for 3 years so its been a while since I saw that show.

I agree the couple were inconsiderate, but I believe the man assumed the risk of driving that far and should not of
been able to collect. I would hate to be held accountable in court for every misunderstanding (there's no way to know if you're dealing with
a nut case in advance when you sell something). I would love to know how that guy proved he actually drove that far. He could of
been visiting relatives or something job related. I wonder if the seller's even knew he was driving that far before hand. It just doesnt
make sense. If he was awarded hundreds of dollars for gas money which he supposedly spent getting there why wouldnt he use that money
to buy his own chickens locally or from a hatchery? I wish I could watch that episode.

Its particularly worrisome when you are selling animals to think any cracked pot could sue you. A lady wanted to buy a horse from me once and wanted to load it on a rickety
hunk of junk way too small and completely unsafe. She was hoping she could tie the horse down so it couldnt jump out. I think it was a homemade trailer with a four foot fence tacked on a flatbed. Luckily
I found out on the phone what she had in mind before she showed up and said no way.

Well the defendants agreed with everything he said. That he called them, arranged to drive from his town to theirs to meet them, that they had this agreement, etc. So they weren't denying his story at all. They said "We changed our minds and forgot he was coming. We offered him two chickens to make up for it, but he was still mad". So they admitted that they messed up and blew him off, so that really wasn't debated. They really had no defense.

He also provided the emails back and forth, discussing that he would be making this long trip, showing that he asked if they would hold the chickens until he got there, the emails showing they agreed to this, etc. He also had gas receipts. It was pretty clear he made a special trip for this because it was a large number of free chickens.

As far as 'why not from a local hatchery', there's a few reasons off the top of my head. One is that there are a large number for free, and also maybe he wanted only hens, and they were adults, so he didn't have the risk of buying roos, etc. Around here at least, there aren't many adult chickens to be found, only straight run chicks. I know that I personally would be willing to make a long drive to guarantee all hens, especially free ones.

Now whether he should be awarded gas money for something that was free, I don't know how I feel about it. I suppose they did have a contract, both verbal and via email to give him free chickens if he came to pick them up, so they defaulted on that agreement by not giving them to him once he arrived.
