Judge my chickens! (Marans/cream Legbars)

Have you ever been to a show? The first time I went, I went as an observer. The birds you enter or bring for sale will have to be tested at the show by the state unless you have them come out to your place and test them. I have the state come to my place yearly to test my birds. Some shows you have to enter by certain dates so they have time to print up the coop tags. Most shows you can't show up and enter. Get the information on the show (show catalog) and entry form. They usually only post them a few weeks prior to a show and a cut off date for entry. Some have phone entry, email and online.

I spoke with the agent closest to me that does the testing, he’s supposed to call me back but I haven’t gotten one yet. Is the PT testing the only one required or will I need to get them AI tested as well? I have been to a show before, the one I’m wanting to enter actually, but I didn’t get to see much. Just the set up and the judges looking at a few birds from afar! Lol

I don’t believe you would be able to enter Legbars into the show as the APA hasn’t accepted the yet.

The APA Board of Directors was made aware of the intentions of the Cream Legbar Club to submit the breed for APA recognition at the October 2012 Board meeting. Per the APA new breed acceptance process the Cream Legbar is required to be shown at APA meets for a minimum of 5 years from that time before qualifying meets can be scheduled. So the Legbar is required to be shown at APA meets. I have shown Legbars for about 5 years. I also have showed Blue Breda Fowl at some shows. There is no Breda club nor application with APA for the Breda fowl to be recognized but it can be shown too. Any breed can been shown at an APA meet. The Breda showed really well and got a lot of people asking for more information on the breed. The draw back to showing non-recognized breeds are 1) you have to bring a copy of the breed standard if it is being proposed for APA recognition because it will not be in the standards book for the judge to refer to, and 2) even if your non-recognized breed bird is the best bird in the building the highest award it can receive is best of breed. Non-recognized breeds do not compete for best in class nor best in show.

Really? So instead of saying “my Black copper Maran cockerel”, it should be my Black copper marans coxkerel”?

I only did independent studied of French for about a year, but the "s" at the end of most French words is silent. There were 3-4 pronunciations on the how to pronounce French words page. I guess you can choose any one that you want. I have heard them all but the one I prefer came up first on this list (these seem to be getting shuffled but it is the mans voice who is american, not french). click the link to listen. LINK

If you speak French you can uses the French pronunciation and get away with it, but most foreign words, including names and cities, have an English pronunciation that should be used in place of the foriegn pronunciation in English dialog. For example Paris is pronounced "Pah-ry" in French but is not pronounced that way in English speach. Notre Dame is pronounced "new-tra dom" in French, etc. So make sure you have the "S" at the end of the word when you are writing Marans, but is when speaking out loud the silent "s" at the end of the word is perfectly fine (although you might try to make the silent "s" almost an "h" sound if you are going for the French flare).

Yes. The reason is because the Marans chickens are named after the town Marans, in France, where they originated. So whether you're referring to one Marans or twenty, they are always called Marans, never Maran. However, it's not all that important. If someone writes Maran in here we know what they are talking about, and that's the main thing.

Agree. I normally don't point it out, because it sounds rude to do so (and not to mention the other hundred misspellings here -- Morons, Orphingtons, Bard Rocks, Seabrite... lol) but in the OP's position of wanting to show, I thought it was prudent to mention it.

It's not rude at all-- you did it in a very nice way. It's good information to know if you are showing, and so is the correct pronunciation. I just wanted to point out that it's a-okay if that stuff doesn't matter to a person. We're all different.

Thank you.
Its probably a good thing we can't hear the way some breeds are pronounced here. :gig (myself included on several, I'm sure!)
