We basically got some of almost every fruit and vegetable. Today after church, I got everything prepped to make fruit juice and vegetable juice - which took a LONG time: apples, oranges, a lemon, strawberries, blueberries, carrots, celery, spinach, cucumber, red kale, a beet, a leek bulb.

I ended up with about five cups of each juice. The fruit juice is, of course, delicious. The vegetable juice is a little "iffy." I think I probably should've left out either the kale or beet. Yesterday, I made of juice of carrots, celery and spinach - and it was really good - although the color wasn't very appetizing. It will take us a couple days to drink all that juice. We are not doing a cleanse - but rather drinking the juice more as a supplement & to replace one meal each day.

I have two concerns: (1) it seems wasteful. There is so much pulp left over. I feed some to my chickens - but it's too much to give them all of it. (2) The juicer makes such a mess. It's a big chore to get everything washed and prepped for juicing and then to clean all the juicer parts afterwards. I'm just not certain I'll continue this long-term since it seems so tedious. I'm hoping that after I juice a little more, it'll get simpler

I have to say, though - some of the juices are absolutely delicious!

You're right about the pulp. I think it's wasteful as well. I tried feeding it to the chickens but they rooled their eyes at me and walked away. Some people say to put it in your compost bin/pile if you have one. You could always give it to someone that may have another use for it. I'll be glad when I can eat that pulp.

My dad is starting a worm farm, I might do the same for the mush or take it to him since he doesn't have the waste we do. He has 2 pound of Red wriggler worms coming in the mail this week and they'll need something to eat! Talk about clean compost dirt. He's going to have it right in his kitchen... it's a neat looking contraption.

The birds will eat the apple, carrot, and green much. They won't touch the citrus. When we made a gallon of juice yesterday, we did it in stages to separate the mush. The apple mush went into Banana bread, yum! Carrots and greens went to the birds. The rest into the compost tub. When the weather breaks we'll be building a different compost system, and maybe starting a worm farm for kitchen compost.

I went to the store and bought out the vegetable department!!!!

..............OK, maybe not the ENTIRE veggie department.........just $57 dollars worth. I copied all the recipies and shopping lists last night and lugged lots of stuff home. I made DH a special treat for in the morning with strawberries, apples and an orange. (he gets this AFTER he drinks the Mean Green juice I doctored up with lotsa apples and oranges)

He also has to eat a bowl of cereal in the mornings to take his blood pressure pill--not a good thing to take on an empty tummy.

I juiced the Mean Green and DH took a sip.......

........... sorta reminded me of our horses when they get a taste of something they don't like and wrinkle up their lip and shake their head........... I had to load it up with apples and oranges for him.

I made mine with extra ginger--yum!

I made extra for tomorrow and put it in the refrigerator, hope it keeps ok.

I took the pulp and packed it into 3 zip lock bags for future popsicle treats for the hens when our Texas summer hits the 100's..........I can see that pretty soon the hens will have more goodies in the freezer than I do.........

I'm thinking a worm farm would be a real good idea.........do the red wigglers make good juice???

Keep us posted.

I have found through trial and error I like the juice made in the VITAMIX a lot better than that made in the juicer. You can also squeeze the juice and remove the pulp with the it. MUCH less waste and better taste. So, if you can afford one, get a VITAMIX. Ten day juicing ends tomorrow, yeah! First two days I felt awful spent the last six trying to get a vegetable juice I really like. Will go again next month.

I think that I will try it again as well. The first time, I had no idea what I was doing. I also finally watched the movie, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" and I understand more and more about the importance of a Juice Cleanse and how I should add MORE veggies. I failed at adding the necessary veggies this go round. I drank mostly fruit juice which is a no no. So, anyone thinking about the juice cleanse, please DO NOT drink all of that fruit juice. PLEASE add veggies. The veggies do help out to "flush" wink wink.
