July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Just got home to here... peep peep peep.. one baby so far. I did see one pipped. Many more to go over the next couple days.

I had this happen under a broody, and it exploded right around lockdown so she didn't sit on the eggs, plus it got on a couple of them. I lost the whole batch. I'm super cautious now about candling and dumping anything that's obviously clear or behind schedule.

FWIW, there were no signs. The nest itself was stinky because it was hot and she'd crushed an egg about a week earlier, so I didn't notice the smell being any different. I had no idea it was coming.

I did say they "usually" exhibit signs... and it probably did, but the nest was already stinky.

Especially if a person is hatching very dark eggs, there is a measure of uncertainty because they are hard to candle. If you threw out all the eggs you couldn't be certain about, then you would never get any chicks!

Unfortunately I lost one Silkie chick overnight... I noticed it kept falling on it's back last night but I hoped it would be better today : (

I did have 6 ducklings hatch overnight and 2 today with one wrong end pipper still in progress. One happy surprise is a blue or lavender duckling that is the only non-black or brown duckling I've hatched! I actually bought a couple of blue or lavender ducklings from another breeder this Summer only to have them snatched by a raccoon, so I am really happy to have another because I would like to get more colors from my flock!

Day 21 update It's been a busy day for hatching chicks today... 7 out and another nearly out of its shell :) If the remaining 8th chick is out and all fluffed up by morning and providing no one else is pipping I'll round those up and move them into the brooder :D If I see no action from the remaining eggs tomorrow evening I'll be checking the status of those eggs..

So far I've hatched 2 Cuckoo maran bantams, 5 Silkies (3 black and 2 paint) and there's a little Japanese bantam resting in its egg still.

I have 2 Silkie eggs and 3 Japanese Bantam eggs which appear to be doing nothing at the moment.

I'm stuck in the waiting phase. Please send pictures of fluffy chicks to encourage me.
my 4... 20% hatch rate sucks, but it's better than 0...

Names: Omelet (yellow), Drumstick (has skinny legs), Benedict, and Fluffy (green egg, pea comb, and fluffy cheeks)

I know the names aren't that creative, but they work for me.

Fluffy is my favorite! I got a few barnyard mixes as my first chickens and my absolute favorite is light color fluffy cheek chicks. My avatar has Reddy that has a red beard and she is the sweetest. My youngest chicks are 6 weeks or so old and I have one with fluffy cheeks and feather legs.
