July 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I will take more photos as the other chicks hatch and when they dry and get all fluffy and send them to flickr too.

Final-Final Update/Results

The hatch did end up going into a total of 23/24 days with incubator shutting down on day 24 with all chicks in brooder. Of the 35 eggs that made it into lockdown, a total of 16 hatched. That would make a 47% hatch rate of lockdown and a 33% overall hatch rate of all eggs set. Not too bad, but can certainly be bettered. There were two pip and zip Delaware chicks that just quit.

Results by Breed

Copper Maran: 10 chicks
Delaware: 3 chicks
Barred Rocks: 3 chicks

The remaining unhatched eggs were gathered and put into cold storage for later assessment, but three were cracked and assessed. The pip and zip failure was, of course, totally formed and in hatch process. Don't know why it failed since egg position was same throughout lockdown phase. It just happens with weak chicks. The two other eggs had chicks that were well formed and one had most yolk sack absorbed but just didn't pip. The other looked like it was formed and quit around the lockdown phase start (day 18) or so. I would blame most of the low/staaggered hatch numbers on inconsistent temps and maybe a little on the hand turning process.

Looking to set another hatch in August and will be adding and automatic turner to the incubator. Lost two eggs due to handling. Hand turning wasn't that bad, with only one of the three daily turns missed in the whole process. Just know that the more that can be automated, usually the better. Also, now know which thermometers are to be trusted and the settings on each that tell me when the incubator is in the the "zone". Again, incubator temp inconsistency throughout hatch was biggest issue with this hatch.

Good luck to all still hatching and to those with chicks from their July hatches--hope you achieve your future goals with your chickens and...

Enjoy your chickens!

I can't believe it! Late little boogers! They have had me so worried! I will spare you my excess amount of excitement. It's just too much. My poor daughter was not spared. I woke her up to come look at it & dance around the kitchen with me. Haha

Congratulations! My hatch was pretty much late also. Did have chicks zipping and hatching into day 23. Always a great feeling when you put into 21 days of effort and then wait...wait...wait...wait...and get that first peep and pip.

Yes, the relief and happiness is amazing! I'm going to pay for staying up all night... But it was so worth it! I'm glad you had a good hatch! :) that's something else I'm happy about, everyone here has been doing pretty well. This group has helped tremendously. I also am now more aware of the things I need to improve on, & I've learned a great deal.

Great progress and pics everyone.

My broody that hatched the two chicks lost one chick the night before last. I found it dead in the morning and it was not under mama hen

Poor mama hen.

I have one external pip. I'm trying to keep myself busy so I'm not staring at the bator all day.

Our broody has two hatched and number three is working on it. The eggs in the incubator are cheeping and shaking but no external pips yet. Day 21 doesn't technically start until lunch today so I'm not worried yet.
