As for my own... The rest of my duck eggs go on lockdown tonight. I put the last one of the previous hatch back on the turner, because I was told that the 'smaller' eggs probably have muscovy parentage on one side, and could potentially take the 35 day route instead of the 28 day one. I candled and the little guy was still kicking, so I will take it off with the others tonight. I will also be taking out the three polish eggs... unfortunately I don't think this group survived the strange conditions in the incubator. I'm very curious what they look like, because when I candled they appeared to have stopped GROWING in week 2, but they were ALIVE up until their hatch date (the 3rd). I candled them last night with the other eggs, and it seems they've stopped moving. So I guess we'll see.

I'd better make sure my daughter doesn't see those baby quail pics. She's already been bugging me about wanting button quail, those pics would make her really up the pressure! Gotta admit, they are cute little critters!

Well the moment of truth has arrived. Earlier today, I was out in the rabbitry, and I heard one of my broody hens clucking softly, like they do when talking to their chicks. When she got up for a moment, I didn't see anything, or hear anything either. But late this evening, I was out there again, and there was a little fuzzy head peeking out of her breast feathers.

THEY'RE STARTING TO HATCH!!!!

I wanted soooo bad to grab that chick, and go tuck it into the brooder, where I can be sure it will be warm and safe for the night. But that hen has been sitting for at least 57 days, she has so earned the right to mother these little guys! So I told myself, "Step away from the broody!" It was hard, very hard, but the chick is still with her. She is sitting on Bantam Frizzle, Mille Fleur, and bantam White Faced Black Spanish eggs. The chick was a rich buff color. It has been eons since I had Mille Fleur chicks, I don't really remember what they looked like, but I thought it was darker than this kid. Clearly, though, not a Black Spanish!

Some of the broodies are sitting on Polish eggs. I figure those cheeps are so fragile, one unlucky peck can kill them, so if any of them hatch, they'll have to go into the brooder. I will let these girls carry on with the others, maybe divvying them up so that each gets to watch a reasonable number (that of course, remains to be seen. After the last candling, one only had three viable eggs left). The next couple of days are going to be interesting!

Day four and I have veining in all 15! Even the HORRIBLY cracked one that I blobbed a bit of wax on(severely detached air cell on it even)! Humidity seems high - I'm not sure why when my water well is completely dried up - even checked my hygrometer with the salt water trick to be sure... was off by just 1% and its currently telling me 60% with absolutely no water in the well... what the?

So.. any way to dry my bator out a bit? Air cell I'm not sure yet. Graphs I'm going by don't show till day 7, just want to avoid another total flop...

I'd be happy if just /one/ hatched.

I have veining in 3 of 19 shipped eggs. Today is day 8. Hmmmmmmmmm. Two are silkies, one is a bantam cochin. Possibly in a 4th, but I can't quite tell. I'm leaning towards no veining, but the shell seems thick and visibility isn't good. So it's still under the hen.

for the 4 little eggies...

Hi all! This is my first hatch, in a home made styrofoam incubator. I set them tonight, and am anticipating the hatch 7/27. I have 12 chicken eggs set... 9 White leghorn/EE mix, two EE's, and one RIR/EE mix. (I wasn't going to hatch any RIR's, I have 10 already, but this egg was so pretty that I couldn't resist!) It is light brown, almost beige with brown speckles.

I have read quite a bit, but admit I am a total newbie!! I had the bator runnign at 99.7 for 2 days, but when I set the dirty dozen, it started fluctuating.

Hopefully it will even out by morning.

I love the thought of such an exciting experiment, but at the same time, I am worried about the possible lives I am helping to become. Oh for crying out loud! Stop worrying and let nature take it's course! (So says the woman using: styrofoam, duct tape, welded wire, a digital thermometer and electricty ...all man-made materials to force the issue.)
