***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

This is my first ever incubator hatch. I have 48 chicken eggs in cartons in a hovabator. Today is day 5.

Can't wait to do my first candling and see how they're doing!

Mrs. K :

I am coming in late, this is my second time, and I don't know what to do!

I had a broody hen last year, and I moved her, she seemed to settle down, I checked the eggs, all was going well. We were gone for one night, and when I got back, she had left the eggs and returned to her original nest, still broody, so I bought chicks for her, and she raised them fine.

Two of those BO chicks went broody, within a day of each other. They are in my normal egg laying nests, and the nest is small enough that I have never seen two chickens in it at the same time. So far, I have not seen either hen off the nest. I put eggs under them July 8, 16 a piece. This is where their mother wanted to nest.

I do have a dog crate, and maybe could get another one. It is warm in the coop, and my coop is not big enough to put the crates in. They would have to be in the run. I am so very heistant to move anyone. Should I just leave them where they are?

I have been opening up the run, and letting my Stars, and rooster just free range. The eat so many bugs they hardly eat any other feed. So my point is that there will be enough space.

mrsK

I don't have any broody hens, so does anyone have any suggestions for Mrs. K, please!

Where do you live? How hot would she be in a crate in the run? Here in the desert southwest, I wouldn't want the hot sun beating down on a kennel with a broody hen in it. Sounds miserable. I've currently got a dog kennel with a broody hen in my computer room. I hardly notice she's there, and if I clean out her messes every day, she doesn't even stink. I won't leave my broodies in the regular nest boxes, because with the scuffling over the favorite boxes, eggs I want to hatch invariably get broken.

Hope you get a big hatch!

I set 19 today and put 20 into lockdown. Wish I could tell if anything at all was going on with my FBCMs. I'm half blind and the shells are just too dark. Looks like I may get a couple of silkies though.

I'm having some issues with humidity right now, so guess I'll be up a while longer. I recalibrated and if everything is correct I have 2 separate units that are reading 62 and 65%, so off by 10 and 13%. I'm using the one that showed 62% for 75. At one point it had hit 78%. I took out both plugs and I've had to left the top off to the side a bit. I also took out the spong and siphoned out the water from the trough. Anyone got any suggestions what else I can do?

I need a good hatch this time.

Day 11 we candled them all have veins but 2 but since we don't know what day they was laid we will wait a little longer.

Hen 1 - was given to me she is a Barred rock and came with eggs so far 2 of hers I couldn't see anything but the others were all very alive that gives her 10 I hope.
Hen 2 - also given to me she is a Buff Orpington and came with her eggs but she too had a mixed crowd of Australorp , leg horns, EE, and RR that laid in her box she has a mix bunch of eggs green, blue, brown and white. All of her eggs are fertile and have veins and dot bobbing up and down all around lol.

So far that makes 22 fertile eggs which I hope by giving mom the chance at hatching them they will have a better chance at life.

That will bring me up to 47 chickens total I was hoping to reach 30 before winter I think I may have over marked it a little.

The more the merrier .....

Thank you OverRun, for reasking my post! I know I am taking a risk, but really with baby chicks and eggs, all of it is a risk. I have decided to leave the girls where they are. The other chickens are laying in a different nest, and my two broody are as tight as ticks on their nests.

It is warm in the house, but it does not seem to be bothering them, we are not having a hot summer, actually more cool. I did go down and offer water to them, one drank a bit, and the other a bit more. I do go down about 4 x's a day, and I have never caught them moving or getting off the nest. But they have to be getting off there once in a while, right?

I have thought about letting the others out to free range, shutting the run, and then physically removing the broody hens, so that they do get a dustbath and some food and water, but part of me is telling me that they are getting off, and taking care of their needs, and they know more about being a hen than I do, cause I really think I just want to sneak a peak at those eggs.

Day 6- how will I wait? At day 10, at night, I think I will go down and candle them.

Thanks for your support. mrsK

When i had my girls setting in the laying box, i ended up nailing some chicken wire over their nesting box to protect them from other hens fighting for the eggs. If you have two in there, this might not be such a big problem. But keep in mind that when they start hatching, you don't want those babies falling. My nest boxes are pretty high up, so that was a big concern for me. So i fenced them in until everyone hatched and then moved the mamas and the babies to a safer place. Just a thought.

I have 13 days to wait its making me go insane lol.......
Trying so hard to keep busy so the days pass by faster it feels as if the days are going even slower.......::ARG::
I have 1 hen inside the house and I have 1 out in the coop I didn't move her cause I worried about breaking her broody streak. So for now she will stay in there.
We will just keep an eye on her...
Good luck
