***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Ooo! I'd like to join!

My broody hen Lacey is sitting on 5 eggs. She was on six but there was too many broodys in the nest so one cracked open. And one of the standard size eggs looks like it wont hatch according to that sticky up top there^^^^

But she has 3 bantam eggs and 1 rsl hen's egg. I candled them last night But Im not sure because my flashlight isn't very bright... but I did see dark spots... Im super excited because I have tried two other times, unsuccesfully, before this when my rooster was having trouble but now he's all better and doing his thing so lets hope they hatch!

Dad is in the back, the two orange hens are the possible moms of the standard size egg and then the little white hen is the broody. But her sisters who laid the bantam eggs she's sitting on look like her.

Edit: I forgot to say when there due! Sometime around next thursday. Not sure cause I was on vacation and my aunt didn't go in and get the eggs.

@ Featherz: Good luck with your first hatch! If the eggs you candled were dark like you described, you have a pretty good chance of getting some babies! I will keep my fingers crossed for them, hope lockdown goes well! We'll be here to keep you company through it!

I've got a little nose poking through one of my eggs and now there are 4 pips.... wouldn't you know it, the only egg that hasn't pipped (and isn't rocking nearly as much) is the ONE egg that was cleaned before it got to me. I'm hoping these 4 get themselves out quickly so I can check on the shiny white egg in the midst of all the muddy white eggs.

Not RIR, Ked... mutts.

Like you, Sport, I started off with 6 little chicks... or rather eggs (from the farmers' market). Only 5 hatched and only 1 was a hen. That's her, Cookie, being cheeky in my avatar.

Cookie and Apple both came from blue eggs.

She grew into a lovely lady:

He was a striking black gentleman with white earlobes. Here he is half-grown, he looked more like a minorca as an adult.

Before Cookie started laying, we bought 8 more eggs from the same woman. None of the blue eggs made it.

But we ended up with a splash and two blues as well as funny Nutmeg and little Luna.

Now the fun begins:

We have babies from Cookie with Apple, but also a few with this character, Evan.
Warning, he's not gotten his full colors in this shot... still a bit teenaged-gangly. Also note the comb, it's the same as Nutmeg's:

All of Cookie's eggs are blue, two of her chicks turned into lovely black hens that lay blue-ish. We kept 2 of the brothers Yin (who started out black with a tiny bit of white, but bled through red & orange) and Zipper, who was a chipmunk (on the right).

We bred Kyan (the splash) and Bingo (Cookie's small combed black daughter) to Yin. We wanted to breed the blues to him as well, but he was too mean to them (all) -- one nearly killed herself trying to crawl under the fence to get away from him. All of the rest of the hens have been in with Zipper.

Confused/bored yet?

I was working on these the other day, but don't have one for each hen yet:

I still have to make collages for the other hens... all were with Zipper, but I had to lump my blue girls together (can't tell their eggs apart), Cookie and her daughter Licorice together (ditto), and we collected 4 random eggs from the other 3 hens, only 2 hatched... no idea whose they were.

Between the two of them, HayLin and Pepper (the blues) hatched 2 chipmunks, 2 penguins, 1 solid blue. Cookie and Licorice hatched 5 chipmunks, and the two Mystery eggs are also both chipmunks.

I'll post composites when I get organized.

Oh... and I put more eggs in the bator. Someone said "incubate them so you don't have to cook them" and I took it to heart.

This batch won't be as well documented, but I'm pretty sure we'll be able to tell some from the others.

Oh and Ked, that's perfect... instead of a swamp cooler, you have a swamp humidifier!

Welcome to Coretta and SuzyQ! Best of luck to Sundown, Featherz & everyone else!

hi!!! We were on vaca and came home to a broody hen laying on 8 eggs, only one of them is actually hers. LOL that was July 3rd...so I am assuming that is the first day. This is all new to us. Just candled one and so far it looks good...little tiny floating black spot!

Our kids are so excited!
eta sorry the broody hen is a white rock and she is hatching out some rir, an ee, and a golden comet...but the daddies are either ameraucana or sex linked....so what would the babies be? Should be an interesting bunch of chicks!

Setting my eggs tonight and jumping in on the July hatch (my very first!) with a hatch date of July 29-ish!!! A dozen splash and blue Marans eggs will be going in the batot as soon as I get off this darn ferry. Can't wait!

Out of my 10 shipped eggs, I tossed 4. 3 had blood rings and one had a blood spot and then just looked clear. When I opened them 3 of them had very early development only and the last blood ring had a very underdeveloped but clearly chicken-like embryo. Sorry Ked, I didn't take pictures cause I don't know why they died. I think they all had loose air cells. I have 1 more that I think is dead but I haven't given up on it yet. I just moved it away from the others.

Of the 5 that look viable, I have 3 BCM (yeah!!) and when I changed out the battery in my candler, I can see a good (non-loose air cell) and definite movement. The last 2 GLW also have great veins and definite movement although they have what I would describe as "watery" air cells. They aren't loose but something definitely seems to flow through them when I candle the egg. Today is Day 10 so I won't do anything else until day 14 or maybe even 18. I will probably look at my questionable GLW on day 14 and toss it if nothing changes.

Overall, I am pleased with my decision making with candling. They were all definitely dead and needed to be removed.

@ Sweet: I love the chipmunks! That is a perfect description.
