***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

Well, got most of the top shell... but the top seems completely stuck on it. I didn't want to risk tearing membrane I can't see so wrapped that full end in warm washrag and put them back but what I did expose looks completely chalky white. No veins that I saw.

If the inner membrane is no longer grey with veins in it, the chances are that you're safe to pick away more shell. If the membrane was sticking to the chick (instead of sliding off easily) then it may be best for you to help remove the membrane/shell. If it sets for too long after losing the veins, it can sometimes turn brown and gummy and make a mess of the feathers.

Will try to remove some membrane in a few minutes then and see if it sticks to her. If it doesn't stick to her though - should I re-wrap her and leave it for the morning? Or remove it anyway just because it comes off easily?

Noooope leaving it. peeled a little of the white stuff back and there was clear mush underneath and what MIGHT be veins in it re-wrapped and put her back :O No bleeding though thank goodness.

Mush is not really a good thing usually. The inner membrane should be smooth and soft with clear red veins running through it if it is 'live and active' so to speak. Underneath should be a clear slime which allows the inner membrane to slide easily over the chick's feathers. Once the veins stop working, the membrane begins to degrade and turn to the gummy material I mentioned. It will have the consistency of firm jelly or like.... sticky crisco.

Clear slime is what I'm finding underneath - mush was the best way I could word it. Clear and reddish which freaked me out cause my first thought was veins it's kinda hard to tell what is what though with dark feathers as a backdrop...

I think I should leave her until morning though.. its getting to be bedtime now and I'm losing focus...

Ack! Today is Day 21 for Mama EE and the 8 crossbred eggs she's sitting on (only 1 is hers), and so far I have one dry, fluffy chick, and one egg with a pip. I have no idea when the chick hatched, or when the other pipped. They are in a cardboard nest in the main coop, with a broody BLRW who has insisted on co-sitting with the EE (who is probably too small to incubate 8 eggs, 6 of which are nearly jumbo-sized).

How long do I give the rest of the eggs before I either move Mama and the 1 chick to quarantine, or move the whole nest + Mama and chick to quarantine?

(I did candle on Day 19 - very, very gently, and saw some that looked ready to hatch and some that looked several days behind but were still moving so alive. Do I let Mama hatch those several days later - with chicks present - or leave those for the broody BLRW?)

@ Rin: Bedtime for me too. Let us know how it goes in the morning.

@ Amy: leave them be until mama doesn't show an interest in sitting on the nest. She will decide when she's done. If you have some way to remove the one chick, this would probably be best if there were eggs behind on development. You can reintroduce the first born when the others hatch out.

This morning they are still alive, their siblings are almost all starting to zip and I removed EVERYTHING from her as she still made no progress. Her yolk is completely absorbed, there was no blood, and her skin seemed rather pink. But shes still strong enough she chirped at me the entire time. I just don't know if she can figure out how to get up. She did flop her wings a bit.'

I don't want to open the bator at all at this point as for the one there's three others that DID zip at least an inch last night so she either gets up on her own or she just... doesn't... thank god I work today... not so much that I still hafta sit around the house listening for them for the next... 6 hours... before said work. :|

The one I helped is mobile! They rolled from where I put them and is currently trying to stand up. One of the zippers from last night is PUSHING.... buuut I need to behave now. They can do it. They CAN theycantheycan please god

out of 10 eggs only 5 hatched 1 died and I am left with 4 and I thought I was suppose to let the broody do it all so I had left her alone for hours at a time. She did her best and I am happy with what I have.

We have 4 Brahmas 3 light and 1 dark and next wed I get to go through this all over again with another 12 eggs.
Babies are with mama she is warming them nicely and talking to them, I think she is trying to get them to eat cause she clucks and pecks but they just hide under her where its nice and toasty.

I will get pictures soon ....
