***JULY HATCH-A-LONG come join in***

I'm a total novice, but in my hatch this month I had that happen and I didn't do anything. The chick never made it out of the shell. Sooooooo, I'd vote for punching through the membrane so it can get some air. Only problem is, when you open the incubator to "help" you risk losing the very humidity that keeps the membranes soft and tearable by the chick. Good luck!

Lucky day, I went to check on the one who hadn't broken the membrane and there is now a bigger chip plus a tear.... Phew, relieved I probably won't have to help!

PIPS!!!! I have 4 eggs pipping this morning.

Gonna meet a firend at the Children's Museum for a play date...thank goodness as I don't want to sit here and stare at that bator all day...Oh yes i do!!!!!!!!
Can't wait so see where they are when I get back. I hope they all do well

Jettgirl...I'm so excited too!!!

Well as of this morning I had 9 out of 10 babies with the 10th one pipped. Sadly #9 is having some trouble... Curly toes and seems weak. I quickly removed it from the bator because the others were pecking it and rolling it around. I picked up some poly visol and am on my way to do some nursing and tape it's feet. Hopefully it will get better but I'm preparing myself in case I have to cull. On the upside I have 8 beautiful healthy babies, hopefully with one more on the way!

It must be a first timer? If so she just doesn't know I can imagine what she thought when those eggs started to move...

No, this is an old hen, a cochin. She is at least 6 or 7yrs old with very few feathers left. I think she is senile.

Sad news... I came home and baby #9 had passed

I'm sad about it and hope that it went without pain. I am just glad it happened within a few hours instead of having the inevitable drag out for days. I'm a little relieved I didn't have to cull either because I wasn't looking forward to that.

I have one more egg in the brooder that has pipped and zipped but I'm not seeing any movement in there so I don't have a lot of hope that it will hatch. I didn't see movement this morning either and I upped the humidity before I pulled baby #9 out. It never got below 76% and the membrane looks normal so I don't think it shrink wrapped. I went ahead and wrapped it in a warm damp wash cloth and pulled the other babies out just now. They are happily peeping in their brooder and all of them are adorable and look great. I've left the zipped egg in along with the egg that I think was a quitter so we'll see what happens.
