July Hatch-a-Long

Well...found a massive egg stash, so I'm tossing them all in the incubator with my Faverolles eggs. Setting a dz. Faverolles, & 32 silkie & polish eggs. We'll see what's viable in a week.

I am on day 16 with 9 "mystery" eggs! I candles yesterday and I got to see them moving around and could even make out some little feet! This is my first hatch so I am excited!

I think they look good too but this is only my second hatch. The darker shelled eggs can be hard to see until they are more developed. I had a Marans egg last time that I really didn’t know until it didn’t hatch that it wasn’t going to. This time I have two chocolate Orpington that are still iffy for me. Hoping I see something on day 7 tomorrow.

I am on day 16 and two of my eggs are marans and I couldn't tell for sure until yesterday that they were developing. Lucky for me they both have chickies in them and I could even see the foot of one when I candled! It's so hard to tell with those dark eggs...

I am hoping to get some silkie eggs for my next hatch. I LOVE silkies but have been too "chicken" to try ordering any. Maybe I will give it a try and see

I am hoping to get some silkie eggs for my next hatch. I LOVE silkies but have been too "chicken" to try ordering any. Maybe I will give it a try and see

Do it! They are the cutest chicks, and they make me laugh all the time. They have no issue holding their own with the bigger chicks in the brooder. I swear they have a Napoleon Complex.

I candled all my incubating eggs to assess viability, as it is day 14 for me. Out of 42 eggs I found 5 definite quitters (bloodline around the center) and 1 non-fertile egg. There were several that were further behind in development, and I noticed that they must be in a cool spot in my incubator, as they felt much cooler to the touch. My model has a fan, but evidently doesn't do a great job of distributing heat. Bummer. I did see about 10 eggs with obvious movement of the embryo, so I'm hopeful that I'll get some fluffy little cuties next weekend. My expectations were that this would be a learning experience and it has been a fun one so far.

My day fourteen candle!! Out of my 32 eggs 13 survived to today. I think 4 are much farther ahead than the other 9. I need some help to understand what I am seeing. If I am seeing it currect.


But good news is all 13 show movement.

No chicks yet, hopefully some in the morning! Only one pip so far, but I set them late on a Saturday so technically day 21 has only just started.
