July Hatch-a-long

Worried I'll have to intervene maybe tomorrow night? It's been like this for a day, looks bad because the chicks keep pecking at it & tearing off the bloody membrane. What do you all think? The beak is left side up, tip pointing south (in the photo), The head is underneath the crack. look like it pipped on the side of the egg. & like it might be trying to zip but is too crowded in the egg. Sorry I can't get better pics, camera is broken

Just be sure it can breath and check often...........................good luck

Question about the wafer thermostat...

The first 5 days of my current incubation the thermostat was holding pretty steady at 99.5 to 100.0, but then it started warming up a bit too much so I had to keep turning it down. Now instead of a half a degree temp span it is going a whole degree or more from turn on at about 99.7 and turn off at 100.8. Could this mean my wafer is no good any more? It is a new unit. I did buy a back up wafer because I heard that the wafers do go bad often enough that a back up should always be on hand during a hatch. What do you think? Any experience with wafers going bad?

I am in the August Hatch-a-long. Set 30 eggs last Friday, 6 are live. Not bad for store-bought fertile eggs. I wanted to use cheap eggs for my first hatch just in case my incubator had issues.

I know someone that used canned air to blow accumulated dust out because the dust blocked heat. Not sure it's your problem, just something to try.

Thanks for all the leg band input. Ordered from ebay.

Day 14-candled (with my new flash light).
Pulled 6 eggs. Now have 36 viable from my original 46 set.
FYI-the eggs laid along edge by motor have done well. Tossed one, second from motor, so temp wasn't an issue.

Question: one egg has a very irregular air sac. It was a egg that has been in turner, but its air sac is on side. Very dark, unable to see movement. Should I just toss? Or wait?

this looks just like one of my eggs 3 weeks ago. The hole got a bit bigger, but she never actually started going around the egg. After 36 hours, I started picking off pieces of the shell. I could see where the veins were, and didn't damage any of them, but I did enlarge the hole.

I I kept flipping off chunks of shell, and after a bit, she stretched and a leg popped out. It went ahead to hatch a healthy chick.

I hope you have good luck with yours. The membrane was so tough (not dry, just tough) that my chick could never have escaped on her own, though.

Mine was in an incubator and the first to hatch so I didn't have the complications of other chicks bothering it.
Wow, thanks!! I just started helping it. I watched and watched and it just wasn't changing it's position. It's beak would pop out and try to tear and the membrane but it couldn't. I just removed all but 2 chicks. The 15th one hatched and I left it a mild buddy to cuddle with. Hoping this one can hatch too no problems at all. I think the last two that never hatched, aren't going to hatch but I'm going to leave them in there for a few more days just to make sure. I candled them earlier today and swore I saw an internal pip in both. Maybe I was just seeing things hoping that they would hatch.

One of my eggs exploded under my broody and every egg (12) was hit with the rotten yolk, me and my mom tried our best to clean them off. It was about 80 degrees with a lot of humidity when we cleaned them off. We tried candling them at day 10 or 11 and couldnt see anything because our eggs are really thick and dark.I candled them again with a much brighter light and i do believe the rest are fertile

. Is there still a chance that some will hatch?

I hope things go smoothly. I just read Sally Sunshine's article on mushy chick disease. They will still hatch it's just that they might die from infection. So sorry to read this, I really hope they're lucky and turn out ok.

Under the membrane looks like it has a protective gel I'm afraid to remove it. I put the egg on its side & leaving it in the warm damp towel. It's chirping

Try candling at night you should be able to see better then you can clean them up some more no soap just some warm water.
There is always a chance.
That's when I candled them, then again I am bad at it lol I'll learn someday. I would wash them better but it's day 20 which means I should have some hatch tomorrow but I think they're clean enough, for future reference Is it ok to get them wet? And thanks for the advice.
