July Hatch-a-long

Question about the wafer thermostat...

The first 5 days of my current incubation the thermostat was holding pretty steady at 99.5 to 100.0, but then it started warming up a bit too much so I had to keep turning it down. Now instead of a half a degree temp span it is going a whole degree or more from turn on at about 99.7 and turn off at 100.8. Could this mean my wafer is no good any more? It is a new unit. I did buy a back up wafer because I heard that the wafers do go bad often enough that a back up should always be on hand during a hatch. What do you think? Any experience with wafers going bad?

I am in the August Hatch-a-long. Set 30 eggs last Friday, 6 are live. Not bad for store-bought fertile eggs. I wanted to use cheap eggs for my first hatch just in case my incubator had issues.

I don't have a wafer assembly but in regards to the temperature; I have a water heater thermostat, my temps have ranged - for the most part 97-100... there were times where the temps were changing mysteriously to 102 (happened about 1x a week) and also went down to 95 (also 1x a week) I set 24 eggs, 4 of them infertile, 1 stopped developing after day 12. So far, 14 of them hatched. You could try to move it slightly closer to the light bulb so it becomes more sensitive. it's always good to have a back up though.

One of my eggs exploded under my broody and every egg (12) was hit with the rotten yolk, me and my mom tried our best to clean them off. It was about 80 degrees with a lot of humidity when we cleaned them off. We tried candling them at day 10 or 11 and couldnt see anything because our eggs are really thick and dark.I candled them again with a much brighter light and i do believe the rest are fertile

. Is there still a chance that some will hatch?

Try candling at night you should be able to see better then you can clean them up some more no soap just some warm water.
There is always a chance.

Worried I'll have to intervene maybe tomorrow night? It's been like this for a day, looks bad because the chicks keep pecking at it & tearing off the bloody membrane. What do you all think? The beak is left side up, tip pointing south (in the photo), The head is underneath the crack. look like it pipped on the side of the egg. & like it might be trying to zip but is too crowded in the egg. Sorry I can't get better pics, camera is broken

I don't have a light, just the wafer and heater type. I went ahead and changed out the wafer and after a few hours of adjustments (as typical when you replace an internal part) it is now back to cycling on and off at normal differences of .5 degrees. Must have been a bad wafer that came with the new incubator.

Glad you got it fixed!

This stage can be so nerve racking huh? I hope the little chick gets busy and hatches without any problems.

this looks just like one of my eggs 3 weeks ago. The hole got a bit bigger, but she never actually started going around the egg. After 36 hours, I started picking off pieces of the shell. I could see where the veins were, and didn't damage any of them, but I did enlarge the hole.

I I kept flipping off chunks of shell, and after a bit, she stretched and a leg popped out. It went ahead to hatch a healthy chick.

I hope you have good luck with yours. The membrane was so tough (not dry, just tough) that my chick could never have escaped on her own, though.

Mine was in an incubator and the first to hatch so I didn't have the complications of other chicks bothering it.
