July Hatch-a-long

That's when I candled them, then again I am bad at it lol I'll learn someday. I would wash them better but it's day 20 which means I should have some hatch tomorrow but I think they're clean enough, for future reference Is it ok to get them wet? And thanks for the advice.

How's it going? Any hatch?
I've read on here that you shouldn't wash them because the rotten stuff will go further into the egg. What protocols do the "pros" take once an egg explodes?

Today is day 17. Do I set them up for lockdown today, or wait until tomorrow? They went into the incubator on the evening of the 3rd, so i counted the 4th as day one. Thanks!

An egg exploding during incubation can be a disaster for the whole hatch. I've lost entire incubator's full of eggs that way. The closer you are to hatch day, the more likely the rest of the chicks will make it. I do wash the eggs. I don't know how you could stand not to? It's the worst smell in the entire world. Plus, if you dont clean them, it makes it difficult to detect other rotten eggs. I like to give my incubtor a cautionary sniff every day at the vent. Once I started doing that, its rare that I have an egg that rots enough to explode. I remove them at the first sign of a smell or leak. If one does explode, after I clean the remaining eggs and sterilize the bator, I sit on my hands and hope for the best. And you never know, sometimes it does very little damage to the other eggs, and they all hatch fine.

The day before Lockdown I set it all up then on day 18 I went into lockdown- & I planned on doing it at the exact hour, but something came up & I had to go out of town, so lockdown 3 hours "late" gradually building up the humidity. 24hrs later, I got my first hatch! That evening & the next day the majority came, last night & early into this morning 2 more, & a couple of stragglers left but I honestly I think they're dead. There is an eggy sort of smell coming out of my bator now, I wonder if its those 2 that haven't hatched.

Hi,
I received eggs that are muddy,,,,,,,,It is OK.............No problem with the seller. She warned me they were laying outside.
Anyway, she told me to wash them. I have never done this and am really on the fence about it. Some eggs are muddy.most are very clean.
How do you wash your eggs??????????

Also wanted to mention that the incubator will start to smell simply from the eggs that have hatched..........I am sure you know that......

Ok here it is, nugget #1 Rhode Island Red x Blue/Black Copper Marans
What's going on with this placenta-looking thing hanging off it's belly? Normal?

bad news, I just found this one dead in the brooder. The belly looked bruised. I'm guessing the hole was a little too big and it didn't heal. Crazy I just saw this one running around this morning. :(

The 2 that are in the incubator have an umbilical cord - not nearly as bad - but - I think I'll keep them separated to prevent the others from pecking.
