Oh my goodness! My husband would be fit to be tied (don't know exactly what that means, my dad use to say it) if I did that.

HAHA well my DH died 9 years ago so i have nobody to control me !!
He would be turning in his grave I think my kids were ready to give me an intervention.LOL

Yeha i truly could have cried by about Jan.It took me 3 days to clean the bathroom up after they were out .and NASTY job!!! It still isnt that great I need to paint the walls yet . GUH You can imagine Lucky we dont use it Pic is of early on... the first wooden brooder- cage I made One went on top of this wood one later and one across the room This is just the one and 3 cardboard and tote brooders before they got older and needed bigger.Pine shavings out the tootoo. Uncontrolable If i have any cant take the cold this year yet i will put them in my unheated metal out building with one or 2 space heaters ...a coop with a bulb anything but for SURE not in the house again.

Organized chaos, lol! Some of us need to learn the hard way. Yep, that's me too. We won't be the first or the last, my dear! Lets hope your pic can be a lesson to others "Do Not Try This At Home" LOL! Love you for sharing that!

Oh no! Sorry for your loss Gen9. The hardest part of incubating, to be sure. So many highs & lows, it makes me wonder why I still want to do it?! All I can say is, the highs are better than the lows & I appreciate the ones that do make it, so much more!

Definitely better highs than lows. Well, I know who my star performers are out of the flock so far. I guess it's time to thin this old flock out. That's what old timers do correct?

Haha, an intervention will probably be in my future I'm sure . Have you seen the video "Hazards of Backyard Hens" where she talks about how backyard hens are a slippery slope? So Funny! My husband watched the video and declared that to be me she was talking about.

Gen sorry about your baby ....it is so sad when they die. Wonder why they have to when they do so new.the real downer of hatching.
I had 2 I had to cull
.Boy talk about hard. Made that little gas chamber ppl make its fast but that really makes you sad I dont even like to kill ants..Knot in your stomach...

Anyway back to lighter talk...

Honestly and this winter just hung on and hung on ..!!!..
Worse was my oldest son He works in a hospital big boss and they call him "Mr Clean." He doesnt live in my town thank God..He thinks chickens are extremely dirty and will make you sick in seconds
.Hed call up and the darn rooster in the bathroom ALWAYS would have to crow right when we were talking .....DARN big mouth!!!
Hed go.."Is THAT a ROOSTER crowing IN YOUR HOUSE?!"
Id tell him no it was outside the window. (GUH) I dont think he believed me.

About Late hatching...my experience
:Last fall i hatched out chicks ... was addicted ,still am but less however always someone wants some chicks i dont have available so i hatch them. Like others here always some reason NOT to stop and keep the bator going REALLY REALLY want to stop the incubating/ brooder-ing. AAHH
Now more lace lav orp eggs are on the way from a spring swap!...MORE incubating.

Anyway I digress.... got cold out couldnt put them in the cold so about 10 chicks at least spent the winter in my spare bathroom.Hatched confident we'd have an early spring like year before.NOPE
.Well by March i had chickens crowing in the bathroom and 2 hens started to lay eggs. I had to build huge cages in there double deckers to keep them in until it got warm enough for them to take the outside air An unbelievable mess. Never EVER again .

thanks for the good chuckle, totally needed it. Thankfully our winters in NC aren't that harsh... well, at least my part of NC I did keep my leghorn inside all winter one year after she recovered from a leg injury. . She's like a dog now. It's cute. but brooding in the bathroom... my husband would... I don't know what he'd do. but this would be something I'd probably do if I didn't have a partner. Thanks for the heads up, I won't try it lol we DID have chickens in the garage for a week during hurricane Irene... he was so mad about the mess they made in his man cave lol hopefully he'll be able to build me a shed this year so I don't have to hear him complain. I brood our chicks in the garage and he hates it.
