. Have you seen the video "Hazards of Backyard Hens" where she talks about how backyard hens are a slippery slope? So Funny! My husband watched the video and declared that to be me she was talking about.

Just in case you haven't seen it...

I just saw this video the other day. A lot of my friends are interested in chickens now that I've got them, one of them shared this video with me and told me that she thought of me when she saw it LOL
Oh I am so sorry. I am dreading this inevitable part of the process

With 16/18 hatches, losing 3 chicks, I wish it was a hatch of 13/18. Just note, if it starts acting like mine did, it's best to euthanize it with CO2 or carbon monoxide, than watch is suffer. Now I know what to do next time.

We have three Frizzles out! A fourth one looks to be shrink wrapped, so I'm going to help that one...
AWWEE Frizzles? Havent gotten into them....yet...
My latest is Silkies but Fizzles and Sizzles are so CUTE Too and a friend raises them.Im fight it.
TRYING to cull down my flock not add.
Sold 4 chickens....I likeD a LOT TOO last time HATED IT...but felt so good i was paring down ... but had a lone baby chick hatch that day so went to get ONE friend for him .ONE.... got 3 silkies chick !.... DARN IT!

WOW!!16 OF 18 OR 13 OF 18 IS TERRIFIC,,,,CONGRATS!

Gen sorry about your baby ....it is so sad when they die. Wonder why they have to when they do so new.the real downer of hatching.
I had 2 I had to cull
.Boy talk about hard. Made that little gas chamber ppl make its fast but that really makes you sad I dont even like to kill ants..Knot in your stomach...

Anyway back to lighter talk...

Honestly and this winter just hung on and hung on ..!!!..
Worse was my oldest son He works in a hospital big boss and they call him "Mr Clean." He doesnt live in my town thank God..He thinks chickens are extremely dirty and will make you sick in seconds
.Hed call up and the darn rooster in the bathroom ALWAYS would have to crow right when we were talking .....DARN big mouth!!!
Hed go.."Is THAT a ROOSTER crowing IN YOUR HOUSE?!"
Id tell him no it was outside the window. (GUH) I dont think he believed me.

HAHAHA that's hilarious.

yeah culling chicks is really hard. I asked my husband to do one for me a couple days ago, he said it was the hardest thing he's ever done (and that says a lot since we are both veterans) but I am relieved in some ways because I was running out to the brooder every hour or 2 just to check on it, then caring for it.. that's over... now I need to get off of here been on here almost all morning LOL Thank you all for the support

thanks for the good chuckle, totally needed it. Thankfully our winters in NC aren't that harsh... well, at least my part of NC :) I did keep my leghorn inside all winter one year after she recovered from a leg injury. . She's like a dog now. It's cute. but brooding in the bathroom... my husband would... I don't know what he'd do. but this would be something I'd probably do if I didn't have a partner. Thanks for the heads up, I won't try it lol we DID have chickens in the garage for a week during hurricane Irene... he was so mad about the mess they made in his man cave lol hopefully he'll be able to build me a shed this year so I don't have to hear him complain. I brood our chicks in the garage and he hates it.
they can get just as close to you as a dog.Its just they are so messy. Its good DH hates it mess in the garage and his man cave defiled ...maybe he'll build you a nice area for them and great coop without further asking LOL
So many of the coops on BYC are to DIE FOR!! Swoon...
My biggest problem i have to build everything myself such as they are. and i dont get better at it believe me.... And boy i wished a few times someone would do it for me PLEASE PLEASE!? LOL

Ive built 6 tractor coops and runs to go with them each diff breed or color and the 3 large cages will-become- coops -one- day
Im sort of built out
So i cant get more chickens than i have. or more work for meWell now ihave laced lav Orps eggs coming...one more group to house

Maybe you have been close enough to death to really appreciate the finality..... why it was so hard for him..

My first one i set it up and my grand daughter wanted to pour the vinegar in to set off the carbon dioxide effect.FINE with me.
But the second i had to do
Waited all day til evening before I could but his intestines were hanging out and i HAD to ... He wasnt getting well for sure.
Gotta steel yourself.sometimes you have to .But not a fun moment at all.

That video was TOO TOOOO funny !(and true)
Think a non BYcer will appreciate it?

Wow! You have 127 chickens?! How big of an area do you need for that many chickens?

Well I currently have 8 coops, 2 of which I built 2 weeks ago to house some new chickens I purchased. One has my lavender orp roo and my ss, the other my BLRW pair, blue wheaton americanas, silver and gold laces &blue wyondottes & black wyondottes. Another has my other lav orp roo, ss, Bo. I have a Bo bantam pair, lavendef, black, white, partridge Cochin bantams, partridge cochins, bcm, buckeyes, light Brahmas, Andalusian, black australorp, production reds, leg horns, bantam lavender silkie, black & white frizzle, mille fluer d'uccle, barn hard mixes that free range. Chicks I have bbs Cochin, lemon cuckoo orp, black/lav splits, Bo x ss, silkie, bantams and im not sure of im forgetting anything. I have 7 acres and husband 40 ajoined, so space isn't an issue. Just seems im always building new coops because I find a new breed I like. I should really start selling chicks!
