July Hatch-a-long

I think it could be. I know when I go on my chicken runs I call all my friends to see if they want anything. I however don't get my one friend. She thinks $2 a chick and $5 a hen is too much but she orders from hatcheries and ends up with dying chicks or her last one with heat nearly half came dead and pays over that with cost and shipping. I like to purchase grown hens for breeding so I don't have to wait for them to mature before I can start incubating. And for the price you can't go wrong. I do pay more for certain ones like my show pair of black lav split orp(lost roo to cocci had him autopsied) I paid $60 for which wasn't bad.
I have at first paid more by trying to save on somethings. Building my coop cost me more by trying to use free scrap. I had to by special pieces to make it all work together. Would have been cheeper and easier to buy all the wood from the start. I thought the cooler incubator was a fail because I only saved $10 and I had to wait so long for some of the parts. But it holds more and works better. So I really ended up with an incubator worth much more. I have learned alot in the process. I am doing this with out help. Learning as I go. I thought about buying the older chickens but I can't afford it right now and the few that I bought that were only 4 weeks have never been as nice as the ones I raised from 1 day. I wouldn't mind buying chicks but it breaks my heart to see any dead in the box.

I have bad luck buying chicks. Bought 5 bcm $6 each have 3 but have to cull one. 12 BO, down to 4 but those were not such a loss $2 each. 7BBS Cochin have 3 left, $5 each with same batch 4 polish top hats $6 each had to cull all, also a silkie that's not pure $4 but not pure so a loss to me(still have). The bcm infected 2 coops which is why I lost my show roo so another loss. The cochins/polish/silkie bunch brought in cocci which that batch I was told was vaccinated against or I could of medicated like I do my hatched chicks besides I find out their possibly Americana crosses and I paid for pure. I just don't trust people either, seems alot are just out to make money and not care about quality. And even though I've had chickens for years I had never been into breeding until this year. So I don't know what to look for all the time, and then chicken fever kicks in.

I only have $6 in my homemade incubator so im lucky there. So far my last 2 coops I have nothing in the buildings, just the run fence. I salvage wood from anywhere I can. I built a 3 stall which had a tack area but turned that into a coop when I built my new tack shed, I have $20 in that for stall latches. It has a loft which 3/4 is for hay and other 1/4 is my "woman shack" but kids kinda took it over. I salvaged wood from a barn that fell down on my road to build that.

Still waiting for last 2 chicks to hatch here.

When I order eggs on ebay, I click on the # next to the sellers name. That brings up their feedback comments. I look for the people that bought the same thing I'm interested in. I write to them and ask their hatch rate and if the chicks that hatched were what they were supposed to be. I've only found one person that was not honest about what they were selling, all three people I wrote to said so.
