I have at first paid more by trying to save on somethings. Building my coop cost me more by trying to use free scrap. I had to by special pieces to make it all work together. Would have been cheeper and easier to buy all the wood from the start. I thought the cooler incubator was a fail because I only saved $10 and I had to wait so long for some of the parts. But it holds more and works better. So I really ended up with an incubator worth much more. I have learned alot in the process. I am doing this with out help. Learning as I go. I thought about buying the older chickens but I can't afford it right now and the few that I bought that were only 4 weeks have never been as nice as the ones I raised from 1 day. I wouldn't mind buying chicks but it breaks my heart to see any dead in the box.I think it could be. I know when I go on my chicken runs I call all my friends to see if they want anything. I however don't get my one friend. She thinks $2 a chick and $5 a hen is too much but she orders from hatcheries and ends up with dying chicks or her last one with heat nearly half came dead and pays over that with cost and shipping. I like to purchase grown hens for breeding so I don't have to wait for them to mature before I can start incubating. And for the price you can't go wrong. I do pay more for certain ones like my show pair of black lav split orp(lost roo to cocci had him autopsied) I paid $60 for which wasn't bad.
