July Hatch-a-long

well there are many people whom believe that if you clean the hatching egg you have a greater risk of rubbing bacteria into the egg and that can cause the egg not to develop or die. We had a few eggs that had a lot of dirt on them and we didn't clean them, they didn't hatch or develop at all. Because the eggs do have pores it is my opinion that the bacteria thing is possible and for that reason we don't clean the eggs we just put them in the incubator and see what happens. Out of three batches of doing this none of the dirty eggs have ever hatched. So I guess just from my experince if I ever have a dirty egg I am going to try to clean it with a damp paper towel but not really expect anything to really happen.

If those eggs are that dirty I sure hope you didn't buy them! That would be poor selling oractices since it's known that dirty eggs don't hatch well. I would probably say something to the seller if you did buy them. Especially if they were not cheap.

As far as cleaning, I think I would take a dry towel or toothbrush even and try to flake it off. Scrub without scrubbing... ;) make sense?

But, that's just my opinion and anyone else can chime in!

Good luck!!!

Yeah, she had them all packed up and ready to go when I got there. I think she was trying to hide that they were dirty? Then we spent some time talking and walking around her farm, so I just didn't look. Luckly, I didn't spend much on them. I am a beginner at this hatching thing!

I'm learning as I go :)

I had a few dirties from my neighbor's broody. I just ran luke warm water over them to get most of the yuck off, let them rest over night in the pantry with a fan going to dry them off in a cool place, then set them in the bator the next morning. Out of 4, 3 hatched just fine :)
I agree... sellers should take care of what they are giving you for the money. Luckily, mine were free, I wouldn't have paid for dirties.

Perhaps she needs to be educated abut saving eggs..............I had a friend bring me eggs to hatch for her.......covered with manure,
not turned ect.........She just did not know.....................
Also, I have read that dirty eggs can contaminate the whole batch, cause bacteria in the incubator............
Wonder if this could have had an affect last time for you?

Last time I had two sets of eggs. Some banties that had several hatch. The welsummer eggs were very clean, and NONE of them hatched :( I'm certain they weren't cleaned because there was a feather or two stuck to them.

Well out of the 82 Quail eggs we set 12 hatched, but we were not really expecting a great hatch rate from these as most of them were given to us and we had no idea how they were cared for or how old they were so we are happy with the ones that hatched. Next batch will go in to the bator on Saturday and we expect a much better hatch rate from them as they are the ones we had collected from our quail and we have been turning them and caring for them. We have a few white ones we will likely cull from the heard. It is not easy building the flock over but at least these guys will be laying in six weeks so we should be able to build up our flock over the winter. I think we have decided to keep the quail inside for awhile that way we know that we don't have to worry about anyone getting in and stealing them. That is the great thing about quail they are small enough to keep inside.

Looks like 2 little pullets out of the CCL eggs so far!!!! If anyone sees something I'm missing that says cockeral on these 2 please tell me! These are the only chicks I have a chance of knowing gender on right out of the egg. The one that has fluffed a bit hatched sometime midmorning, the other sometime this afternoon. Now just have 1 more CCL, 4 BLRW, 1 Lav. Am., 2 FBCM, and 3 silkies to go!!!!!
