July Hatch-a-long

Welp my mama turkey is doing awesome with my BBSO eggs.I'm proud of her,and I'm even more proud of me for not messing with them even to candle lol. Ill candle on day 18 and put the good ones in the bator to hatch :)

So what is your reason for taking them away from the turkey? Will she not take care of them after hatching or...? Just curious!!!

Several reasons actually, fire ants is probably the biggest one. As soon as babies start hatching under my mamas the ants invade and kill the babies before they can even get out of the shell. Also she is in a pen with ducks, goats and papa turkey, probably not the safest place for tiny babies.

Makes sense! :)

Also...we just love watching the little fuzzbutts hatch :) it never gets old. The kids and I have been known to stay up all night watching babies pip and zip lol

We have 19 eggs on day 20 (and a half). 5 pips and one hatch so far! This is our first hatch. Here is our very first chick.

Final count on road warrior chicks is 19! I had 20, but the last to hatch had a ruptured, unabsorbed yolk sac. I waited a little bit see if it would absorb up, but no progress after a few hours so I culled by CO2. It was quite runty and its initial pip was bloody. Try as it might, it seems the deck was stacked against him from the start.

Despite being 2 days early, this was my best hatch yet. Of the 5 eggtopsies, one egg was odd shaped and super shrink wrapped. Two appear to have quit shortly after day 14, and two more fully formed, but unabsorbed yolks. In the past I've had a number of chicks that are fully formed and have absorbed the yolk, but just not pip internally. These results were much less frustrating.
