July Hatch-a-long

Well I looked at my calender. Tomorrow is to start lockdown but I will be in the Dr. office all day. Sigh sooo I have removed the eggs from the turner and placed them in the hatching area and upped the humidity. All 7 had something in there but one is very iffy. Say a prayer that I have a couple of little puffy Faverolle hen chicks soon. I love the way they look. It will almost make my winter flock complete. I will just have to get some 1/2 Eng. Buff orps to hatch and I will be finished hatching for the yr. ........ Well ....... Maybe.

I know I can leave them in a carton to hatch, they're still incubating in one, I made a tray with hardware cloth & 22gauge wire so they don't roll out, they cannot hatch in that. So my question is, on day 18 can I place them on their side or should I transfer cartons? Does it matter?

Hoping for a good hatch for you. And we all say we are done after this hatch. Never happens though.

I should add that they're in a cardboard carton right now with wire all around it

I'm sure that I am too late to actually join the July Hatch-A-Long officially, but I am so excited to hatch my first batch of chicks in 30 years! I just bought an incubator that should arrive sometime next week. Already bought a Brinsea Brooder, so I am ready to get started. For my test-batch, I thought it would be fun to try hatching some fertilized eggs from my local natural grocery. I know the hatch rate will be low, but it's a good way to make sure my incubator works like it's suppose to before investing in more expensive eggs.

Looks like everyone else is going to be hatching out soon. I am going to be anxiously following you all

I cut the bottoms off of a carton and use that.  Just enough to hold the egg in place so that other chickies dont roll them.  Also could use towel/toilet paper roll and cut it in 1/2" incriments.

That's a good use for those towel rolls!! Thanks!

So sad to see so many having problems... It seems to be very common. It was in May and June as well!

I go to lockdown tonight... 19 eggs. 3 varieties. I wait until i have an internal pip to up humidity though. It worked better last time than adding right away. Good luck everyone with hatches today!!!

Never too late!!!
Even if they turn into August babies, we'll take you here! You'll just have to follow us all into August!

Well, count me in for 19 eggs... Found another infertile egg. & probably 18 or even 17 as 2 more were questionable as this is day 11 or 10 or is it day 12? Ugh... The cracked egg is still going strong. I may be seein things but I swear I could see "breathing" under the candle wax that covered the crack. Ehhh should I be worried? Sorry for all the questions ETA: I have already set aside eggs for the next hatch lol!
