July Hatch-a-long

CG - I read your first 2 posts about your eggs and was frantically searching to see what happened!!! After all that craziness you have 3 babies!!! That deserves a double

Thanks. I'm giving the remaining eggs until tomorrow and then I'll eggtopsy to see if they at least developed.
What is a good way to open eggs? last time I had an egg that I had given up on, I took the egg and whacked it on the table like a chef and it cheeped at me. Just in case there's good chicks in these eggs, what's a better way to open them?
WARNING: extremely cute

The other thing is these were eggs from hens that were wormed recently... They should have been tossed but I decided I would try and incubate instead.
Yes, cute!

So what wrong with hatching de-wormed eggs? The eggs would have been thrown out anyway so why not try hatching? What do you have to lose? IMO, you got two chicks (splay leg isn't a worming issue) so you can sell, or grow these chicks. At least you got more than one since I've heard single chicks are more "needy" and lonely.

Quote: Congrats DragonSadhana on your hatchling.
I'm a first time hatcher too so don't take my advice (it's more of an observation I've seen)...I've pulled my chicks out after 8 hours because they just don't seem to be getting dried off. I've assumed that because I'm hatching at 79-80%* humidity, they aren't able to dry off and fluff up. I moved these little ones to the brooder and they manage to fluff up pretty quickly.

Edited: 70-80% humidity (not 79) if it gets to 60 and I add more water or soak the papertowel

Thanks, I have already looked at these topics though. Doesn't really answer my question. I don't plan on keeping all of mine, so would it be best to get them vaccinated? or is it pretty much up to the person buying them?
I never vaccinate mine ,guess if they (the buyers) want them done you could.
I have never had anyone ask me if the chicks had been vaccinated when I sell them.

Thanks for your response! I was thinking that if tomorrow, it looks crowded and the hatchlings (we're at three now!) haven't fluffed up, I would move them to another incubator I have which is already at temp, and much lower humidity. We'll see how it goes!

I am new to this (which is part of the problem) but I couldn't find much info on people hatching wormed eggs so I wasn't sure if it was my greatest idea...but I did it anyways! i am glad I got two out of it so they can be buddies.

I've got 9 total now out of 13 eggs! My husband had to cull a wheaten maran chick this morning, I had to help it hatch and when it did we discovered it had no eyes - strange.

I was just reading something about chicks never developing eyes today. It could have been a genetic issue or vitamin deficiency in the hen that laid the egg. My blue splash marans had a problem with balance & now he's getting cataracts. All the other chicks I raised with him are doing great, & the adult hens in my flock weren't affected. I think it might be a genetic "fart" (among marans perhaps?) but I might have to cull. I just wish I didn't have to this late in the game. Hopefully, he won't get any worse, but I'm expecting to. Glad your other chicks are healthy!
