July Hatch-A-Long

Anybody else?????
I have another broody!!!!
She is setting in the chicken coop next to one of our other broodies (HennyPenny for those who know her)

There were many chickens laying in her nest and then when she went broody they started laying next to her nest box!*So I put the chickens into the second coop and closed that coop that she was broody in! But then one of the hens dag a hole in and layed another egg next to HennyPennys nest box! Then a few minutes later I noticed that there was another hen there that just wasn't leaving the nest!Then I noticed that she was broody so I gave her some more eggs (now she has 11) to brood!
She is now very hapy and I cant wait for them to hatch!
Now I have 3 broody hens!
1= 16 eggs
2= 17 eggs
3= 11 eggs
The stupid hens laid on the floor!
That's a lot of potential chicks!

My Welsummer laid an egg today and I had room in the incubator so I popped that in making 5 Oliver Egger eggs now. I'm hoping to get some Wheaten Ameracauna Eggs from a breeder whose birds lay the brightest blue eggs I've seen. If I can get them this Saturday, I may pop them in the incubator as well. One of my Wheatens laid an egg this morning that was cracked so I opened it to check fertility and it wasn't fertile. :( Ten days ago that bird was laying fertile eggs, so my fertility seems to be spotty. I'm trying to hedge my bet and get some Ameracauna chicks this year.

Anyone ever do a staggered set in an incubator like that before? They'd be 5 days behind the other eggs. I'm new to the hatching chick thing.....soooooo addicting. Should have never bought that incubator!

I have found another nest in one of our fields! There are 17 eggs so the hen should go broody soon!
I have soo many broodies and so many potential chicks!
OH NO!!!!!!!
But in another way YAY!!!!!!!!!!

I'll join in! Getting my 12+ serama eggs tomorrow. They should hatch out in the first few days of July~ (which is totally awesome because my birthday's July 7th!)

This is my first time incubating eggs! I got my current 3 bantams from MPC and decided to get an incubator because it was too hard compromising the kinds of chickens I wanted with the breed/shipping minimum from hatcheries (sooo hard with bantams).

Does anyone have tips for serama eggs? I heard they're harder to hatch than other chicks, but I've also heard of good results by just treating them the same as any old egg. (Maybe they're just harder to hatch in general because they're less viable?)

Also... on the event that I hatch out some roosters... anyone try eating a serama? Seems like there wouldn't be much meat on it lol :I

Sorry I can't answer your question but in your post you said your chicks should hatch around your birthday. I have a broody hen who is due on 29 June. That's on my birthday. I can't wait cause it will be such a lovely birthday present!!!!

I will be setting eggs to hatch in July. I'm currently in my first ever hatch right now, but am already planning my next. This hatch I went into nearly blind when my husband showed up with a borrowed incubator from work. I had eggs shipped, and while I'm doing well (9 out of 26 so far) I'm really anxious to start again with local (cheaper!) eggs. I'm getting some on Friday from my vet- 2 dozen heritage (non commercial) RIR, approx 6 silkie eggs and the rest are barnyard mix from blue standard Cochin roo and a standard buff brahma Roo. Hens are Americana, leghorn, rir, buff Orpington, marans, buff brahma, light brahma and a few other odds and ends. Should be fun seeing what I end up with!
I think I will wait until Sunday or Monday to set so they aren't due on the Fourth of July.

Hahahhahahahahahaha Yes maybe you should wait!
Some of you goys are soo lucky! I don't have an incubator and if I did it wouldn't really work> Luckily I have ............. BROODY HENS!!!!!!!!

I have 20 Pekin ducks due to hatch the 5th of July. Can I join? This would be my first hatching of ducks and my second hatch even so I am totally new to all this.
