July Hatch-A-Long

There are a few pips under my broody hen!
YAY! Come on, mama hen!

Amykins have been following wobbles and the when to intervene thread with interest as with my detached air cells assisting is fairly likely as I would be very surprised if they hatch unaided with no malpositions. Nervous as never hatched ducklings and while in principle quail are more fiddly there are so many that if I dont get to them in time I dont feel as bad as I will if it happens to my duckies whose webbed feet and beaks I have spotted when candling... Wobbles is delightful.

Mine are call ducks, which are notoriously hard to hatch! Other ducks don't have as many problems because their bills are larger and more powerful. Add shipped eggs to that mix, and whoo boy...tough times!

As long as you're there for them, I think you'll be ok. If I can hatch call ducks, I have faith you can hatch your lil' quailies! The "safe hole" Lacry suggested works.

I have two magpie duck eggs where the air cell is still floating and another that sort of looks like the macdonalds logo bent upside down at a 45 degree angle. I have assisted on malpositioned button quail and coturnix but the stakes feel higher with ducklings! I read sally sunshines assisted hatching guide and albamagirls struggles with an very difficult batch of muscovies so hopefully shouldnt be awful but nervous as I cant decide whether to wait until theyve all naturally pipped or hatched then candle assess and aide if still living or to be aware that at least 5 are likely to need assistance and candle during lockdown for internal pips, add safety holes etc.

After going through a difficult hatch, I advocate safety holes as a default measure, but you still gotta wait for them to internally pip. With such dilaidaded air cells it's an uphill battle, but I'm confident that your little ones can figure it out!

:) She's in a box with a hole in it, but her and the eggs are really close to the edge of th box. Like, her tail is hanging out of the front. Can I move everyone back? I really realy don't want the egg closest to the edge (it's a pipped one) to fall out and die.

I LOVE calls. My avatar is my white drake. I can't find him a mate for the life of me though. I've combed every swap meet and all ove rthee internet. Do you have any extra white hens (or any hens) that you'd be willing to sell?

I don't, but I know someone who does! The only problem is, he won't ship adults. Just eggs. So unless you live in the Northwest, you'd have to take your chances on doing your own hatch and then hoping to get a girl. :/ So I'm afraid I'm not much help on that.

But from my most recent experience, hatching these little guys is SO rewarding! I've never seen such a cute and affectionate duck in my life!

Darn, I'm in the NE. :( I feel so bad, he's been all alone since March. He has the chickens, but he's probably so lonely without any ducky friends. If worse comes to worse I'll tet one shipped from a breeder in the Fall. But those are like $45 without shipping.
