July Hatch-A-Long

It has never happened to me but it is not uncommon! Was your broody a first timer! She may have by accident squished the chick.:idunno

It seems to me it is common enough in nature for at least one to die. The same thing happened to me with both my broodies. One died from getting out of the nest and getting stuck, the other one didn't absorb it's yolk and didn't finish hatching. Then of course there are the bad eggs that don't hatch. It's all just luck of the draw, and since with a broody there are so many variables it's hard to tell. I think, in my limited experience, broodies actually have better hatch rates than those from an incubator! Not to mention the babies seem tougher from the get go. Don't best yourself up over it, it's all part of the experience of hatching chicks unfortunately.

Thanks guys. Yeah this was her. First time and my first time with a broody. I have another chicken wanting to go broody but we dont have room for more chicks right now...

My first silkie egg hatched today but there was a little bit more blood than I'm use to is that bad

One of My Cream Legbar eggs have piped. Due to hatch tomorrow. Excited!!

July Hatch-a-long to date. Buffy hatched 1 BCM, and so far Blondie has hatched 1, and had five Light Sussex chicks given to her. We seem to be having issues with the last four. I also have eggs hatching in the incubator

How do u candle Cortunix or button quail eggs? I can't see anything when I try? ;-( I've not had great hatch rates with shipped eggs! I ordered 7 malay eggs and only 3 were viable and just 2 hatched so I hada try 7 more I put them in the incubator about 2 weeks ago and now I've already threw out 2 stinky ones and I can't really tell if any is developing! Makes me so mad! I also ordered 16 cream Legbar from California I'm in ky and out of 16 2 hatched and only one lived the other didnt fully absorb the yolk! I'm so upset! I also ordered 6 Serama and 6 Ameraucana and I've threw out 2 Serama so far and I can't even really see through the Ameraucana eggs so I'm just really upset over it! I also have 80 Cortunix quail eggs in and 12 buttons and I hada make a temporary incubator for a couple days waitin on the 16 cream Legbar to hatch and I had a few temp drops and spikes (up to 102) so I sure hope they are ok! I moved all quail back into the good incubator now! I do have 28 barred rock eggs in that are all developing great! Those were not shipped though! If I have a bad hatch with these other shipped eggs I won't be buying any more! ;-( I've lost so much money already! I normally have great hatch rates! I did have some trouble with call ducks once before I tried one egg once an no hatch then 3 eggs the next time an no hatch so I gave up on them! I didn't realize they are "notoriously hard to hatch" makes me feel a little better about it!

Those shipped eggs are so tough... I have vowed to buy my eggs locally and it has involved a lot of driving! I am constantly tempted to try some more though.

Good news! I went down tonight (day 16) to candle the possibly cooked quail eggs. I saw 3 internal pips in the first 5 or 6 eggs, including one with movement inside the egg, so I decided to stop checking on them and lock down. I observed them for maybe another 5-7 minutes and saw 3 other eggs rocking.

The only thing I can think is that when the temp spiked to 115 (presumably for the 4-5 hours between visits), that was at the level of the thermometer, which is about 3 inches above the eggs (because there isn't any spare room on the floor). I had a pretty big vent hole at floor level and the fan must have drawn in enough cool air to keep the eggs from overheating.

These are shipped eggs but they didn't travel by air so I may still get a good hatch out of these yet. Regardless of the result, I have about 50 of my own eggs waiting to be set.

Well thank goodness I have 75 Cortunix quail eggs due in a week an 12 button quails as well as 30 barred rocks 6 Ameraucana 4 Mille fluer d'uccles 6 Serama and I had 7 malay shipped eggs that I've already threw out due to stinking ;-( but the quail was in a incubator that had a temp spike of 102-104 for a couple hours the one barred rock egg that was in with them is doing good so I have hope for the quail they r now in a more reliable incubator! Crossing my fingers! That spike was during the first couple days tho!

Sadly one of my chick had broken its leg today! So took it inside and decided I would have to amputate the leg (as it was already infected etc.) So I got some Dettol and dabbed it on! Then cut it off (the chick dint seem to feel it, o it was just brave!

) Dipped it in Dettol again and then in flour (we had nothing else!) Then applied a tissue on it until the bleeding stopped! It stopped very quickly so I immediately put on a plaster!
I hope I gets better! Luckily its hoping around with its friends! (I decided to take some other chicks and put them with him!) They are all fine and I really hope

Ha it ever happened to somebody else before or does someone have a one-legged chicken???
