JULY HATCH ALONG!!

I thought for sure my LG went and cooked my eggs. Tonight I found my thermometer slipped off the tops and down into the turner, measuring from the bottom. The tops of the eggs were at 105 degrees! I just candled though and saw 3 out of 4 dancing around! So cool!

I just received some Ebay batam Ameracauna eggs today. I candled them real quick and 10 look great, 2 have semi-detached air cells, and 2 have detached air cells. Two extras and they arrived in better condition than I could have hoped for! I am waiting on half a dozen Mille Fleur D'Unccle eggs and a dozen splash Marans eggs to show up over the next two days and I will set them sometime this weekend. I am excited and have my fingers crossed the others arrive in good condition. I was looking at a couple of other breeds to buy too and now I am realizing I don't have room so thank goodness I didn't (bidding is so addictive though, and who doesn't love hatching new breeds?). I also have a broody out in the coop that I will have to put to use as I also have a dozen of my guinea eggs to set and I was wanting to hatch a few of my OEGB eggs. I might need therapy or a 12-step program or something.

Guess I'm hatching this month. my aunt thought all her guinea hens were dead (flock was attacked), but she found one in the field sitting on a clutch of eggs. It's a bad mommy, though. 3 chicks died already, so my aunt called and asked if I'd incubate the rest of the eggs. Got 16 guinea eggs in the incubator; no clue when they'll hatch. One looks a few days away from hatching, one a week, 5 maybe have 2 weeks to go, and 9 that I can't see anything in yet.

I have 18 bobwhite eggs in one incubator and set up the other incubator this morning hoping to set eggs tomorrow.

I am on day 18 in a Brinsea Octogon 20. In there I have 5 Copper Marans (2 definitely developed, 3 cant see at all through the shells), 4 true Araucanas well developed ( statistically one should not make it), and 7 Exchequer Leghorns well developed. I have many broody girls...but 2 have taken up residence in the nursery house together. One is a Speckeled Sussex 3 X proven mother, and one is a Gold Laced Bantam Cochin, who will hopefully learn the zen art of being a mommy. The Sussex will accept any number of chicks over the period of about a week. I took the bars out of the incubator and put a damp rag dishtowel under the eggs to facilitate walking of chicks and cleaning the insert. Cross fingers and toes! Happy 4th to everyone!

I have bought quite a few eggs on eBay. Mostly great people to deal with, but because of the luck of the draw when mailing things, especially in the summer, I always sort the search by 'nearest distance'. A lot of the time, if the seller is in reasonable driving distance, you can pick up and not be at the tender mercies of the USPS and fate.
