Jumbo Coturnix Quail - Learn Me A Few Things

Just curious... do they lay inside the box, or outside? I've been wondering if I should make a box for mine... so far she's just been laying in the sand, or shavings where she wants. This isn't a very good shot of the pen inside the new coop.

And of course, the cuteness she has to look forward to...

When you say you hatch for meat and eggs - Do you also eat the eggs or just sell them?

My husband says to me last night - Ummm, you bought what? And I need to build what??

Hahahahahaha!

Tag to learn on the coattails of MissPrissy. I have 50 eggs in the incubator due to hatch on the 7th.

I bought some of those special pliers and clips to make cages, but haven't been able to find any 1/2"x 1/2" or 1/2"x 1" welded wire.

Eat them as well as sell them for hatching. I've heard they're great pickled, mine haven't started laying yet so I can't give my personal experience there. The couple we got our eggs from eat their quail eggs, they pickled them, made sandwiches out of them, and I'm sure plenty of other ways to cook 'em.

Mine always go into the nestbox to lay. They don't seem too keen on laying anywhere else and that is fine with me since it makes it easier. I have heard once they really start laying they just plop them out where ever they are at the moment. Have yet to see that lol. Mine mostly lay before sunrise as well. And I get at least one egg each day at the moment.

I still need to build new cages for the rest... I have a Texas AM trio almost to the 4 week marker, about 5 plain old cortunix and some tuxedos and chocolates that will need pens.

Interesting... I have one laying right now, and she always lays in the late afternoon.
I want to try pickled eggs... I hear they're yummy. Of course, I have a hard enough time peeling chicken eggs...

Miss P, be prepared to fall in love with these little darlings... the coturnix (I pronounce it co-TURN-icks, too...don't know if that's right or not... never heard anyone pronounce it before!) are just the sweetest things.

I'm assuming they are similar to grouse when it comes to eating (if you can bring yourself to do that) - the preparation is similar, and there are recipes out there. We'll have to start a quail recipe thread...

Well my 14 are still in the cardbox brooder. I want them for meat and egs. Maybe to sell some chicks.
I pronounce it like the name courtney.
but i think its supposed to be Co-tur-nee

I know how to cook quail! We love bird season and fresh dove an quail for supper. I grew up eating them. I just have never raised them. There are so many different ones I didn't know where to start and just decided to jump in.

I always start my birds in the pressure cooker. Then into buttermilk, roll in seasoned flour and fry off quik until golden brown. Serve with grits, sliced tomato and biscuits.
