I'm sorry. :/ Sometimes even nature doesn't go as planned, but thankfully he had you looking out for him. I hope that your wife is soon too preoccupied with the little fluffy ones to be too upset about him.

Well, it turns out the incubator I borrowed cannot hold a stable temp AND the thermometer that came with the borrowed incubator was not accurate. ARGH!!!!!!! The eggs have been set for THREE DAYS at who knows what temp and humidity
I'm really hoping this other incubator I was able to borrow will be more stable and work out. I can't stand the thought that my faith in a thermometer killed 28 potential chicks.

We have been hatching for two days. All but six eggs of 26 were purchased from Ebay. Silkie bantams. I read reviews and only chose the sellers that had multiple high fertility (ensured high roo count) and hatch rates, and repeat buyers (as well as quality birds). With that said, always a crap shoot. So far 16 (three of our eggs) so 13 from shipped eggs. At aprox 50% hatch for shipped eggs I am thrilled. Incubator varied in temp a bit, had to really stay on top of it. Once up to 102, so was on the fence as to viability. Still waiting another day as we had a power outage for 8 hrs, and a few may be a bit slower. Happy Hatching all! Expecting a second incubator hatch on the 17th as well as saving for the next incubator full. Difficult to get quality birds locally (many great breeders in Michigan, but I am very rural) so decided to try the online shipped eggs. Glad I did, this hatch anyway. So many variables! Good luck all! It is so disheartening to have a hatch fail, but what a feeling when it works. My first hatch on my own. My husband has done it for years.

Depends on how inaccurate it was. If it was way too hot for those three days way worse than too cool
Today I woke up and it read at 102. Some days it varied from 98 to 101. And I have no idea if that was the true temp because I'm pretty sure the thermometer that came with it isn't accurate.
Ok, I checked the bad thermometer against the good one and the bad one reads one degree too high. So, it appears the the hottest the incubator got was 101-102 and the lowest it got was around 95.

they might still be ok since it was only a few days. i would still give them a try

Thank you soooooo much guys. My family is down to 13 hens and they are barely laying enough to feed my family, let alone sell extra eggs to cover costs of feed, so this hatch is really important to us. I was terrified I ruined it. I should get my new candler by Friday (day 7) and I will be candling to see progress. Thank you for the encouragement guys!
yeah just keep in mind they may be a little behind with development with lower temps. Good luck!
