June 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

Ugh, I've forgotten how much heat 41 developing chicks give off! I've spent the past two days turning the incubator down because I wake up with it at 101+! Today I had to turn the wafer down 3 or 4 full turns AND blow a fan on the incubator to bring the temp down. Thankfully the chicks are still movin' and groovin', but it has definitely been stressful. 4 days til lockdown, and 7 til hatch day!

Cute pics all. Congrats on the hatches.

Question, Hubby put 12 eggs on lockdown on the 16th, then on then on 19th he found the temp at 103 and humidity at 75%, since I was out of town and not reachable he panicked and turned the temp way too low, when I arrived in the evening it was 93 degrees humidity was still good. Any chance of them still hatching?

My other 10 chicks that hatched on the 6th are doing great.

Depends on how long they were at 103. Going cooler slows them down but usually isn't very fatal to incubating. If concerned swiftly candle a couple.

I don't think you will know until you go through hatch. High humidity can build up condensation in the shell and the chick drowns. Low temp or high can stop them also. It just depends on how strong those little guys are and how long they were at the extremes! Crossing my fingers for you...

My broody is determined to be a Mama, and I am a bit worried about her. I had to toss her only egg the other day; it was rotten. Well, without any eggs under her I let her sit a bit longer waiting to see if the broodiness would fade. I have had a very busy week and she is still sitting. Well, I went out to check on her, and to my surprise she has more eggs under her. I candled them and there is development. I am not sure exactly where she got them, because I have been collecting eggs daily. Maybe another hen has been laying them under her.

Now, I am not sure what to do. We will be reaching the three week mark soon. Obviously these eggs won't be hatching for another two weeks or so, and I am concerned for her health and the developing chicks. I have an incubator if she decides to abandon the clutch, but what about her. I have a bowl of food right beside her, but I can't get the water dish near her without risking it spilling into the nest. I know she gets up to stretch her legs and get some water because I spotted her up a couple times. What about her overall health? Is it safe for her to sit on eggs for so long?

I would think so as long as she has access to water when she hops off the nest and she is shaded when on it. Setting takes some out of them, but usually they won't push them self to deathly limits.

You have some good questions about the broody...hopefully somefone with broody experience will weigh in...

My girl has been sitting for a while too and I am equally concerned

The Olives are here! Two just moved to the brooder, one more is drying off and 3 eggs haven't pipped the shells yet. Out of 29 shipped eggs that were handled WAY too much in a borrowed still air incubator. I'm just happy I got any to hatch!
