June 2025 hatch-a-long

Pics
Well, chick #2 hatched. Unfortunately it was severely deformed - its brain was outside its head, possibly caused by high temperature during early incubation from one source I saw, and I had to euthanize it ☹️.

So Ms. Fuzzy Toes is the sole survivor. I'll call up Tractor Supply in a few hours and see if they possibly have any bantam chicks (they did the last time I was there a couple of weeks ago but that doesn't mean anything,) but if not it looks like I'm going to be raising a singleton.

Oh no, I'm sorry your second chick didn't make it. Hopefully you can get some friends for your lone chick 🤞

In my coop, there were happy baby sounds coming from below my broody duck so I assume all is well. I've installed a small feeder and tiny water station in the back of the nestbox, keeping interactions to what was strictly necessary to reach behind them, which mommy seemed grateful for - she helped herself to some of the starter and drank some.

My three eggs that would have hatched this sunday started to go bad so I tossed them out...

That means I'm down to my last three eggs (due in ~10 days, now in my brinsea). I candled them today and they look appropriately veined and there was clearly some subtle movement inside. I'm going to watch these babies for signs of bruising like a hawk!

And here s/he is: The $200 Chick ($500 if you count the $300 I spent in a fit of frustration on the Brinsea that's coming today,)

I'm going to give the Hova-bator away, but I'm going to STRONGLY suggest that whoever ends up with it gets a new wafer for it if they're serious.

I shouldn't grumble too much though I suppose. At least I got a chick, I know there are shipped hatches that end up with a 0% hatch.

Very cute chick!!! But yikes on the cost!! That is what I am worried about is having a $300 chick!!

Sorry about the 2nd chick. That stinks!

I am going to candle my eggs once it gets dark. Hopefully all still growing. I was away this weekend and the shoestring worked well to hold humidity. Now home until Thurs am then gone Thurs till Sun so hopefully the shoestring works for then. Then it is basically lockdown for the first set of eggs. I think my eggs are on day 9 and 11. Feels like it has been much longer but hopefully the time flies with going away.

whelp, the duckling is gone. It was fine like an hour ago and now it is dead 😭 I don't even want to know what happened, it's not like there's an answer that would make this better anyway.

I'm down to three eggs I guess. Lockdown is in ~5 days or so since it's likely to be early.
