I'd love to join!
I just finished my very first hatch ever in my homemade 'bator. It's a still air styrofoam one with some jars of water in the bottom sealed up to help hold the temps.
We (my daughter and I) set 3 eggs and had one hatch out, but I think my temps were a little low because it took an extra day or two for the one to hatch and the second egg was fully formed just never pipped.
This time I've moved the eggs to a warmer area of the 'bator. I had shied away from the heat thinking it was too high, however the extra day to hatch made me rethink this and i've moved their position.
AND on top of this I have my first ever broody hen! I've very very excited about this
I have Barred Rocks, and they are wonderful gentle chickens and the rooster is of a lovely temperment. So my daughters dog got ahold of my oldest hen and she died from the attack a couple days ago, the next day I set 5 eggs in my 'bator and then a day later, my wee hen went broody.
I'm seriously considering putting my eggs from the bator under her. I was going to sneak my lonly little singleton chick in too when they all hatch, I will have to think about that. So my incubator eggs are ready on the 16th and the broody eggs on the 18th.
I'm also getting some meat birds and turkeys on the 7th, eep! My first batch of those.
Anyway, here's a pic of my first lil fuzzy butt
expect more pics of this cutie pie, I'm a proud mama lol.
I have a much better picture, but after many many attempts the website just wont take my upload. I do sometimes have trouble with byc in the evenings when I assume there is alot of traffic
