JUNE HATCH-A-LONG come join in

My broody hatched out 10 and 2 died. After they were about 4 days old they just were not eating as well as the others and I couldn't get them very interested. They just ran around trying to stay under mom. As their older siblings got bigger they moved when move started scratching and these didn't so they got kicked around a lot. I think there were several days differnce between them and they just didn't make it. I should have took them out when I suspected they wouldn't make it.

Anyway all I did was add a heat lamp to the coop and pointed it at the nest box they were in. Just to add a little. I made sure that the heat lamp didn't really warm the straw. I hated to start a fire.

gwill, you're not far from me! (I taught 6th grade science in Lapwai last year.)

I'm interested in how your fridge eggs turn out. My daughters and I incubated a dozen from the co-op with our hen's eggs last year. None of the store-bought ones hatched, but three made it to the feathered stage and one of those had pipped through the membrane.

We picked a couple eggs to candle last night (it's really too early) and were able to see some veins and a little body/eye in two of them. Here we go!

Please see page 1, post #1 for info on *When is day 1 (see #69 & #70) http://urbanext.illinois.edu/eggs/res32-qa.html There's some of my favorite info on hatching included in the first post of eash monthly hatch-a-long this year, more info added as I see it. Like someone else said here, it's better to do lockdown a day earlier than a day later, as later could interupt the process of the chick positioning itself in the egg for the air cell when they will do their internal pip for the first air inside the egg & then 2nd pip to the outside.
Happy hatching!

Thank you save the favs! I forgot about the 1st page of this thread. Thank you for gathering all the info! I have 3 orp chic in the bator right now.

They look great and I think they are blues. I still have 5 eggs not doing much. One pipped late last night no zip so far. I will wait until this evening to take my chics out. I want to take them out, but I do not want to jeopardize the other eggs. Hopefully more hatch.

Save The Favs. you totally helped me out so much..on my last batch I got 19 little ones from the incubator. Thanks so much.

Put eggs in the bator last night and a few more today. Was supposed to buy eggs off someone locally and they bailed at the last minute. Not pleased since I waited weeks to get these eggs. Oh well. I have Wellie X ee mixes in there, buff brahma and RIR x EE mixes, and possibly some Wellie x BCM mix. I am so psyched to see if the Wellie mixes hatch!! I'm going to the Dominican on a free (yes FREE) trip a few days after they are born

Opal is still sitting tight on her clutch. She's down to 10 eggs. I candled a handful the other day and tossed one. I just set up a garbage bag awning over her dog crate. It looks like it's gonna pour here.
