She ended up with ten chicks! I had been thinkking of getting rid of her but now that she has brooded so wel I guess she can stay. I have also discovered a broody in my Salmon fav breeding flock. I guess I will let her sit too. She is on the eggs from her roommates. A salmon fave roo and two fave hens and a buff orp hen. Oh my!

I just went out at 10:30 and I noticed that there was a broken egg under my broody. I started to freak out because I couldn't find the baby or anything. Then I saw an egg that has the shell off but there was like a white membrane around it still. Like when you boil an egg, kind of. I was warm to the touch so I just put it down. I'm hoping everything goes well.

Looking forward to photos, Outback!
And speaking of photos, abooth, that is the cutest little family! Glad you are letting her stay.
Amber, how far along is your little half shell? Hope all goes well.

We candled again, I don't know. The veins are still sharp and branching, but instead of kick-kick-kick all the motion is very slow. I think the heat addled their brains.

I feel like crying. The baby that was hatching last night is dead this morning. I sure hope more hatch soon. I didn't see any pips or anything when I went outside.

Out of curiosity (and a fear of exploding eggs) I candled about half my incubator today. Just the half that was set to hatch the 21st and the 24th. The 6 I had for the 21st were doing fine- nice veins and little tiny heartbeats but the ones from a couple days later were -all- clears, or at least looked that way. They're from the exact same birds, so I know the roos WERE doing their jobs. However, I looked at the dates on the 3 eggs from the 1st batch I pulled out on Friday that were clears, and it's all from the last couple days of May, the ones closest to the batch of 8 that are clears. The fertility rate seems to have declined completely from 100% (4/4 fertile and grew) to 0% (8/8 fertile).

I'm very confused and will have to take a look in a week at the last 5 I was given. I know the cheeps have been under some stress, because they're actually in the process of having three coops built around them while they live. They're all free range so they wander about the yard while the construction is going on, and come in at night to lay and sleep. I'll have to figure out if the roos are not doing their job or if the storage pre-incubation was wrong now.

So I'm down to 6 for my June hatch now!

ok here I go..on the 10th, I put 17 partridge cochins,3 Ameraucanas, and 4 EE's eggs in the incubator...so far so good.
on the 11th my second little bantam D'Uccle hen hatched out 8 little babies....all in the brooder and doing fine. I think I already said the first little bantam D'Uccle hatched out 6 on the 2nd....YaYYY
