June Hatch A Long

Update, still just one right now but might have another soon. First one isn't really fluffing up, she's sorta crusty looking. But boy oh boy is she loud lol. Everytime I go in to peek she wobbles over and peeps. :love She's sleeping right now so it's a little quieter. Keeping her in the incubator over night so that when I put them with the other ducklings tomorrow I can monitor because they're a week or so older.
Hope you wake up to another happy little duckling!:jumpy

Candled my eggs since tonight is day 6 just to check and see how they were doing. Out of each dozen eggs I had 5 either quitters/ infertile or bloodrings on each dozen so I have 14 left that are still covered in veins and looking good. A few I couldn't see through well and since I didn't want to move them too much (being shipped eggs) I candled in their rack and just marked each egg as I did it if I saw veining or not.

My totals so far, 3 out of 4 from my broody, 1 wasn't fertile, I will be candling the 6 eggs I'd picked up, today is day 8 for them, then in the 24 count incubator, I've ended up with 21 left, 3 lost to breakage. I'm not quite willing to bet yet, but I believe I have another broody in the making and she's sitting on 2 right now. tomorrow will be day 1. I'm finding the broodies absolutely amazing, my girls have never even looked back before after laying a egg, I don't know what's possessed them..lol

Bummer about the quitters but good that you have some vigorous looking embryos! Were these ducks or chicks?

Ah, that contagious broodiness! GL with your latest broody! We have one broody with five wk chicks and two other broodies waiting for me to exchange their ceramic eggs for the real, day 18 eggs tomorrow night! Plus a broody Welsh Harlequin duck who is mean and getting no love! :love (JK we still love her, but I don’t think we can handle more ducks right now!)

Congrats on the baby @Bookworm0124! And anyone else I missed?

Candles my eggs on day 21 tonight. Weighed and took an average and marked a few air cells. My average weight loss is a tad high. Some eggs right on and some a little past. A few low. It’s only off by a percentage so I think I’m going to stick with it. Like I should have lost 11.75 percent and I have lost 13.

Still 31 developing! :thA little worried about some....

Was it @Mixed flock enthusiast we were discussing shipped eggs developing weird? I have a couple same deal. I included a gif of my normal eggs. Dark all the way. (GIF 1)

I found one that has a pretty good hint of view still, this is the lightest of the regular dark eggs. But the development covers the entire egg. (GIF 2)

Then the ones that are TOTALLY clear on the bottom. There’s a few like this, they all are the shipped. (GIF 3)

Ugh, I’m not feeling the love on shipped eggs right now! Yours look alive at least! I couldn’t see into these BCM well enough to tell if they were developing in layers like that, but I do seem to recall someone else talking about this issue in shipped eggs. I’ve been practicing on candling dark eggs and can finally get a good idea of what I’m looking for, at least this late in development. So, I decided to re-candle the eggs tonight, day 17, ahead of broody placement tomorrow. Of the 12 shipped eggs I set, only ONE looks good with one questionable (embryo filled the shell but no movement). Of our own OE eggs, I think that one is DIS, leaving five. I pulled the BCM eggs that are clearly not filled with a 17 day baby out and examined closely with the high intensity light. All have dead embryos, some quite small and some that were maybe midway through. I’m really pretty sad about the whole shipped eggs thing (first time with shipped eggs).
