June Hatch A Long

Hi guys, i incubated some shipped lavender aruacana eggs on the 6th. 9 of the 12 had detached air cells so i set them upright in cartons and only gave them slight movements for the last 14 days, ive candled tonight and had one yolker and 2 quitters, all the other nine seem like they have healthy embreyos in.
The air sacks have all now firmly re attached (although saddled). My question..... should i leave them upright till hatch? Or at least till lockdown? Am i right in thinking they will have an easier and possibly more successful hatch if they are laid back on their sides, especially in the final few days for positioning themselves.
Welcome dougie!

This is a total personal preference. It’s always a gamble anyway going into this with these conditions.

There’s a lot of thought I feel behind hatching an egg the way it was incubated. I noticed even hatcheries do this, and hatch upright. Lots of people have success doing egg trays for lockdown and hatch, some have done it during this months hatch a long. I’m going to try it with the eggs that have been upright in my turner.

It’s been my personal experience I have a lot of late quitters with eggs like you have, after lockdown, and I wonder if it’s from going from upright to their side....

Yes, waterfowl are painfully slow. If you happen to take another picture, @LilyD is our duck assisting genius and I see she's back!

Yaaaaay!!! :pop

Ducks can take upwards to 3 days to hatch fully. So take it slow. I would widen the hole a little bit each time you oil as long as there isn't any bleeding it's okay. I try to even slip the qtip a little under the edge of the membrane to oil under it to keep it from resticking to the baby.

Is it okay that this just happened ?? This was all him, I wasn't messing with him or the egg at all & he just flopped partway out, lol !

That's perfect and happens more often than not. Let him just hang out like that for a bit until he's ready to try to get out of the bottom then you can assist the rest of the way.

@HolyDuckBatman @Bookworm0124
How are your assisted hatches going?
When I last looked and oiled there were still some veins. I'm working on getting the baby to bed and then I'm going to look again. It's chaotic here at night lol. But I managed to empty the grown up duck pond and my 2 1/2 week old duckling brooder. After raising chicks... I forgot what pigs ducklings are. I cannot wait to start bringing them outside. Next week looks to be really warm. I'm going to set up a temporary pen for them near the big duck pen for day trips. My hen going broody kinda threw off my plans for integration lol

Now, I have zero experience with shipped eggs because I always pick mine up locally but I had never heard that about changing the position of the egg before! Does it only apply to shipped eggs? Because I knew about hatching upright for when an air cell is detached but that's it. During one of my hatches, I should say halfway through incubation, I have switched incubators from an upright to a horizontal turner. lol, It happened to be one of my 100% hatches...pure dumb luck maybe?

I will leave them as they are then, i HATE late quitters, theres something totally depressing about getting them so far and then falling at the final hurdle.
This is the first and last time im doing shipped eggs, i would rather drive 200k and make a day out of it with the family to collect them than try and do damage control with the condition they arrive through the post in :(

I agree, I just had to add another "after lockdown" loss to my list from the last hatch. Those are definitely harder than the early quitters for me too.

A mini road trip is exactly what I did last time to pick up hatching eggs! My friend and I are actually discussing doing it again because it was fun.

This is an interesting topic and I think I might experiment with it a little bit soon with eggs from my own flock, since I have both an upright and a horizontal incubator. Out of habit I just put my eggs that are due to hatch in the next few days into my trays that hold them upright, as I've had good luck hatching them that way in the past. Now you've made me realize that this time I've been incubating them on their side so maybe it's not such a good idea!

Just went and checked. Pulled a little membrane away and oiled a bit more. I THINK it's still chewing and working on the yolk.
