June Hatch A Long

How much longer does your mama have to sit.

I went out a few minutes ago and she was off the nest eating more watermelon. I have 2 cantaloupes in the refrigerator for them tomorrow. I'm so over summer already. View attachment 1821031
Same heat advisory we have! 96 F in the shade and 109 F heat index! Broody guineas and Naruto are hot, but Naruto looks better than before. I may change her bottle out for a cold one. Susan just looks at me like I’m annoying her; guess I’ll leave her be. My daughter says she’s survived on sheer determination... I gave all the chickens and roosters slices of watermelon. We are at day 19. Crossing fingers for chicks sometime tomorrow - Monday!

3 eggs that are under my broody hen are pipping, one is zipping. Only thing i'm looking forward to since I just lost 5 chicks to a fox
I missed the fox story. What happened? Another of our hatchalong members just lost her new chicks last night to an unknown predator... So sad for both of you!!!

Summer is like this every year where I live in Georgia. It's like living in a sauna, hot and humid, yuck! We keep making more and more little adjustments to try and keep our flock safer and more comfortable in this heat. I think if we don't get a greenhouse fan installed in the coop to circulate more air soon then I'm just going to paint the roof white to reflect the sun a little better. I feel like every little bit has to help but honestly, nothing seems to lower the temps more than where trees and bushes are growing. They provide shade, release water vapors, and photosynthesis actually lowers the temps as well from absorbing carbon dioxide. Our chicken coop is half under an oak tree but we converted a Rubbermaid shed so it's like a hot box for a couple of hours every day. So far the hens have been ok but lots of panting and my broodies like to stand in a water bowl and dunk their heads before sitting some more, I don't blame them!

I'm sorry for your loss to the fox! Little chicks do seem to make everything a bit better though, don't they! :jumpy

i'm unsure, but i'm speculating that the chicks jumped through the holes in the wire surrounding my run, i'm definitely going to separate the chicks that survived and put them in a secluded fenced in area.. wish I had done that sooner but mistakes happen

Wow, what a bummer! Sad to lose the little ones that are just starting out, but I hope that you’ll soon have new chicks in your flock.:fl:jumpy

Got the eggs moved! And.... they have a perfect spot in the new bedroom under the watchful eye of Dolly.

My husband is obsessed with Dolly Parton so I have a habit of naming farm animals (see my screename) after Dolly Parton songs to get him interested in my farm hobbies. :lau
