June Hatch A Long

Pics
That might be what my runt CX is suffering from... I actually want to have a sustainable heritage meat flock, but I can’t afford the breeds I want for start up anymore so I’m going to experiment with some Red Rangers, my heaviest Layer Roosters, and whatever I can get for free/trade until I can. So upon realizing a fellow farmer had almost all CX pullets, and I’m pretty sure I’ve got mostly Ranger cockerels (I never attracted boys like this when I was single!) I decided to try my luck with them. They are a CX from a small local hatchery, and really haven’t been much different than the Rangers in feed conversion or growth rate. Of the 18 birds she received, 3 died fairly early on and the remaining ones showed a lot of variation in body conformation and growth. But that is for a different thread...

26 chicks, 3 pips, and I’m warming up my second incubator... I’d be staying inside my shell too with that reek! And it was so clean and not stinky before the chick I lost.
Yay for the second incubator!

Check out my Cornish thread in the meat bird section. “Chronicles of raising Cornish and other meat birds” I’m just getting started down this path. I’m getting partially obsessed.

And with this, I’m checking out too. Good luck overnight to all the babies!

As promised, baby pictures! Venus and Virtue were store bought, the rest just hatched. SpinCycle is also called "Car Alarm". I'll let you figure out why.

They're drinking water out of my hand for the pictures. They were busy being zoombies and couldn't find the water dish RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. So I helped them out. They're also bloated from each having a single mealworm.

Aside from Venus and Virtue I have no idea whatsoever what they are besides loud.

They all know that "Hi babies" means I'm paying them attention and they get food. "Here chickadee" means mealworms. And "SHADDUP AND LET MAMA TAKE CARE OF YOU BRATS." means it's time to go to bed because they've been bad babies and are giving me a headache. (I say it very fondly, they know it comes from a place of love. I don't think they know I'm chewing them out. Demon Kitten thinks being called Terror is praise)

I actually already had a nest in June, not counting it for the hatchery since it are send eggs and the parents don't live here; and the poor thing only excisted out of 1 duckling.
So until 20 june it needs to get some more attention from us (unless we can find a duckling same age nearbye). It's already a spoiled brat with it's own Ipad :p

Okay I’ve been a little over obsessed recently about broilers and meat birds and four way terminal hybrids....ask @LilyD... anyway, a female Cornish cross will carry a recessive dwarf gene from the parent line, but a male Cornish cross will not.

One of the reasons it’s hard to breed back from modern broilers. To have luck, you should be using the boys, but they’re really too big to breed. Most people try and hold back a female and the program is difficult to work on with that dwarf gene.

Hehe you aren't the only one obsessed lol. FYI 2 weeks before mine are 8 weeks.

I had a bunch of babies one year that would scream anytime I wasn't there playing with them lol they were like the spoiled grand kids :p I hope they give you a little piece soon.

So my incubator I set may 16th... I have hatched 3 bantam silver barnevelders... 1 LF blue laced barnevelder hatched today and I have my last two bantams zipping and a death layer zipping as well.
That leaves 4 more dL and 9 blue barnies to hatch,
I locked down SFH and 55s yesterday and have 3 pipped...
Love those breeds! Blue Barnies!!!!
