June Hatch A Long

Can’t believe how many babies I’ve missed :love
For us we have finally reached
:celebrateLOCKDOWN :celebrate

We started with:
12x mixed pekin bantam (cuckoo lemon, gold partridge, lavender, black)
12x light Sussex
12x rare purebred ixworth
12x cherry valley x Aylesbury

The duck eggs turned out to be infertile :( which we discovered around day 6.

I never candelled again until today just before lock down and we are down to 22 eggs, we had a couple of early/late deaths and a few infertile.

Out of the 22 we have 10 bantams left, 2 white eggs and 10 brown (can’t remember which colour was which for the ixworth and light Sussex but I think the 2 white are the ixworth)

As well as a possible 22 hatchlings over the weekend our cat is due to have kittens, no idea of her due date but I don’t think she has longer than 2 weeks left.

I can see it all happening over the weekend and having one big baby boom when I have the guineapig house/run to finish building so I can get started on creating the duck house ready for when our ducklings can go outside.

Did I also mention I’m a single mother of 5 children aged 7 and under.... busy times :lau

Wow! Busy busy! I hope all of your hatches go well! Your cat's "hatch" too! lol! :fl I can't wait to see pictures of all the babies! Feathered and furry! :love

Oooh pictures and video are awesome we love to watch :D Good luck on your hatch.

Just set 2 dozen eggs. One dozen Lone Oaks Crele Orpington Eggs and one dozen English Crele Orpington eggs. Also have another dozen Muscovy eggs that will be joining the incubator tomorrow. I am praying (and praying and praying) for a dryer hatch than the last one but the clouds are looking dark and the dogs say they think a thunderstorm is brewing again ugh.

I got the humidity up to 65% by putting plastic wrap over the top of my box and a teacup of boiling water in one corner....I pulled back a tiny piece of the pipped shell to see if there was membrane to be oiled, but there is a beak...and it's pushing at the shell.....View attachment 1811938

I absolutely love seeing them getting ready to emerge!! Maybe it's because I'm so new to this but its so magical to me. In between two different worlds.

You said the magic word... Orpington lol. I'm in love with mine. I wish I had been patient and gotten more but I picked up some barnyard mixes and met my quota. They're lovely birds but I just love my orp girl lol. She's the only one who lets me pick her up and asks for petting at night.

I love them too! There are a few English Orpington lovers in this thread. lol
I'm expecting Mottled Orpingtons to hatch on the 22nd! :love

This seems to be one of those big personal preference things based on your broody hen as well as your flock. I've mentioned before that I have an extremely docile flock but I initially followed what people were saying online and separated one of my broody hens with her bitties, by the 3rd day she was pacing by the door wanting to leave with the rest of the flock so I opened the door and she immediately went to showing the little ones how to forage and would posture and warn the rest of the flock when they were too close to her babies, it's all a natural part of introductions (this particular hen was low on the pecking order as well). Since my initial experience, I haven't bothered with separating my broodies from the rest of the flock since I now know what to expect from them. As far as the 2" holes they will probably be small enough to squeeze through for quite some time but they will always come right back to stay with Mom. If you have a dog that would go after them or just don't want to take the chance then zip tying something with smaller holes to the bottom would be your best bet. Good luck!
Thanks, great advice.
