June Hatch A Long

Oh yeah!!!! So exciting! We have one CCL hen, the one we bred to make OE eggs. I’d really love to get some of the Opal Legbar hatching eggs, but with my recent experience with shipped eggs, my enthusiasm for that is a little dampened... GL with your hatch!!!!
I had great success with my opal eggs from Candace Waldon, who created the breed. She had impeccable shipping and I had a little over 50% hatch rate with her eggs.

To top it off my opal pullet (I kept two pullets) is beyond my favorite bird. She is at a great middle ground in the pecking order of her hatch mates and is inseparable when we are out doing chores.

Wow, that’s such a great picture! Cute kid and beautiful bird! Yeah, I’ve been eyeing Candace’s website but am thinking that the 5 hr road trip might be worth skipping this whole shipped eggs thing! Maybe in the fall... Thanks for sharing!

The Opal Legbars are beautiful! So far I have found hatching eggs locally for the Cream Legbars, Frosted Legbars, and Silver Legbars but no Opals yet. These will be the first 4 eggs I'm hatching for myself though and I plan on keeping 1 pullet and whatever chicks hatch frosted too. :love

Hmmm I didn't know there is a silver legbar! I just got two girls and they are different in appearance, one being lighter and the other darker and I am just so in love with them! The light one is actually lighter than she looks here because she is in a shadow. And you can see the little cockerel I got with them as well.

Oh the things we do for birds we want! I drove 8 hours roundtrip for some Legbars and Penedesencas last weekend lol

So hot here today! 95 F but 51% humidity for a heat index of 108 F. Even the guineas are suffering! Naruto is hot even with the frozen bottle and fan, but Susan Silkie is still not panting... I think she’s shut down all nonvital functions to go along with the fasting she’s doing... Oh, and here’s a pic of our cranky broody WH. She’s hot, but she takes a ton of breaks lol. I think that if she actually had eggs their temp would be all over the place! And the hens seem to be voting “no more chicks”, as they keep kicking her out of the nest box!

The little chick didn't make itView attachment 1820941
I’m so sorry! That chick was so early, I’m amazed that it was able to last for the few hrs you had with it. So hard to lose them so late! GL with your hen! I’m also wringing my hands over our 105 heat index today and trying to help Naruto... She got off the nest for an hour today, which was probably for the best. It’s not like the chicks need her heat and it’s plenty humid too!
